Some bear spray in their face will fuck up anyone’s day, even works on animals

Would be awesome if you kept a blog and uploaded from time to time. I'm sure a lot of people would love to hear about the trip and how the taco got you through it. GL and check in when the time comes!

It would also be nice if you could arrange some TW meets on you journey.

There are other Tacomas out there.

Maybe the staff of TW could offer some assistance- it is a very interesting idea you are pursuing @Round the world

I think we will bring some. At a risk of being off topic, After 35 years of being in the woods I’ve had three runs with black bears. I never carried bear spray but did carry a 40 S&W pistol. I never used it but didn’t pull a couple of times and there’s very happy that I had it with me

Trip sounds great, and I love my Tacoma. But you life would be much better if you used a bigger truck and diesel fuel is more reliable in other parts of the world.

It'll be fine just bring some spare front end parts the roads are garbage. Maybe a tie rod or too

Yes, a bigger truck would be much easier but they don't fit on the narrow, sandy or muddy ruts 'cause there's no such thing as a full size pick up truck there. Would constantly have one tire in the rut and one tire out of it

Definitely have to think about a on board parts inventory. What should be carried?

Yeah totally! Not calling the dealership to unlock the car that's for sure! Trying to think of a good hidey spot for a spare key

An oil change kit, tools, maybe some spare shocks and tierods. My friend drives his to Guatemala and has had a few breaks with his Tacoma, never the Hilux.

    Oh that's a tricky one.

I'm reminded of a few books I read about Appalachian Trail hikers. Every story began with their backpacks full of fancy gadgets and foods that the astronauts eat - all the stuff that the experienced hiker who happens to now be the manager of REI told them they couldn't survive without.

90% of that several thousand dollar investment was discarded within the first 100 miles.

My opinion-the key here is to have a very close friend/relative that will volunteer to be your home-base support team. Because the only way to know what you truly need is through trail and error. <--(the phone typo'd that, but I'll let it stand because I'm 5 and I like puns).

I guarantee that by week 3 you will be sending via DHL a bunch of extra junk that's just getting in the way. Better yet, if it's sellable, take it to the local flea market and barter for something unique, then send that home.

If you or the truck decide you can't live without a replacement intake/espresso making manifold, get your home-base team to send it to a hotel or customs depot at your next stop.

That said, anticipate for the most common emergencies and prepare accordingly. A first-responder grade First aid kit including travel meds, (cippro, malarone, and the like).

Tire repair kit and inflator. Dual battery system. Epoxy and hose clamps (jb weld won't look pretty, but it can stop a radiator puncture in the remote bush). Duct tape. Fuses. Heavy duty ratchet straps. You don't necessarily need to fix it with a vast inventory of onboard spare parts, you just need it to last long enough to get to the next town.

Be critical of your tools. Try to get it down to a single roll if you can, but keep it functional enough to get at the suspension or the serpentine belt. Basic screwdrivers, a pair of adjustable wrenches, hex heads, only the socket wrenches that apply to the truck. A hammer. A unijack.

Maybe it has been covered but have you thought of purchasing an already built vehicle more conducive to the type of travel you are planning? I understand already having the Tacoma but if you haven’t started the build it seems like going another route might be a better option. Personally I would be searching for a built 70 series LC
