Would you guys recommend fluid film or is there a better option? And can it be applied in cold weather

Rust is like cancer, you have to cut it compeltly out. Just let it go, you will waste money on any undercoating at this time. I am gambling with my 2018 with 47,000 kms, will let it rust and age nicely lol

I’m more optimistic than you, the frame has been undercoated by Toyota so it’s got a nice shield on it but I’m looking to seal up any exposed rust and spray the inside of the box frame

I know the rust wont go away, I’m just looking to give it more protection until winter is done. Once summer rolls around I will be dealing with the rust. Sanding down and repainting rusted areas. I can upload some pics of the condition of my Tacoma tomorrow

The thing you have to understand, the frame will keep rusting under that undercoating anyways. All Toyota did is - covered it with undercoating to make it look visually good. I've had it done on my 2005 tacoma as well before, frame kept rusting under it. It had worse issues than your truck, fried tranny, leafs that cracked at hwy speeds, leaking shocks and plenty other things. I just let it roll like that until I had means to upgrade and sold this truck to some guys who shipped it to ISIS lol

At certain point and age of the truck you will have to ask, will you be keeping this truck for more than 5, 10, 15 years? Or should that be next guy problem?

Not planning on selling anytime soon, the frame is pretty solid, needs some tlc but not terrible. The bumper is the worst part, it’s mounts are wrotted out. The bumper itself has a good amount of rust on it too but not penetrating. It’s got 300,000km on it and still runs fine, no issues. There is rust under the hood but nothing terrible. The hitch is stuck, I’ve tried everything to get it out. It makes a nice intimidator everytime I get tailgated though. The receiver is in worse shape than the frame, a lot of the bolts are rusty. I like the truck though and would like to get the most out of it. The rust doesn’t discourage me, it encourages me to address the issue and tackle it. The body only has some surface rust in a few spots but is overall good.

It was one of the cheaper DCLB at the time I bought it, I did some negotiating and got what I’d consider a good deal. If it could last another 10 years I’d be a happy man.

I sometimes wonder if the previous owner is on here though because he loved Tacoma’s and upgraded to a newer year

There’s some things like trans flush and replacing the spark plugs that I’d like to do to the truck but I don’t have the tools or space at the moment. I’ll see what happens in the summer

The rust like I said has to be completely eliminated, otherwise spending money on undercoating those spots or doing half job will not change anything. So get some flap disks, good air compressor, sand, grinder and start :stirthepot:. Hitch can be always :sawzall: , receiver can be found at any u-haul or even junk yards. Hopefully this Taco will roll another 300K

    1. Smaller lighter tires.
    2. Feather the stupid pedal.
    3. Trade for a Prius or Corolla.
    4. Trade trucks with me - 2009, 4 banger! Getting V6 gas mileage right now because of big tires, steel bumpers/sliders and winch.

Speaking of. If anyone is in the market for a hinge and latch for their DIY tire carrier I have one by 4x innovations, double shear. Still in its packaging that I don't think I'll be using anytime soon lol

Mostly Hwy in summer I get ~12 l/100km. Now it's winter, I spin a lot sometimes, get in the 17 l/100km range.
