Hello. Just picked up a 2012 TRD Sport. Any specific pointers for the 2012?

Wanted to introduce myself and thank everyone on the forum for contributing, I've been lurking unregistered for 3 or 4 months now and the forum has been very helpful for research.

If you're not interested in a wall of text thanks again and I'll see you around!

    Here it is:

This is actually my second Tacoma. I had owned mostly sport cars before I got over to Tacomas, the last vehicle before Tacoma was a 2015 Golf R. Loved the car to death but as soon as my warranty expired I had a raft-load of electrical issues that were going to cost me a fortune to fix so I wanted something more "practical".

I had fond memories of many first and second gen Tacomas I had encountered and recently went through some life style changes that meant the change to a truck would be helpful, so I figured I needed to get one and since the third gen was "newest and best" I started there.

I ended up trading for a very lightly used 2017 SR "Utility" and cash. I had that for about eight months (until last week). No offense to all the happy third gen owners out there but I found it to be a pretty lame and it didn't remind me at all of what appealed to me about the Tacoma. It was heavy, under powered, had a sloppy automatic transmission and the seating position felt like I was sitting in a bath tub despite the high deck.

After owning the 2017 for about 3 months and realizing I wasn't into it I started looking for a second gen that appealed to me, although at the time I didn't realize quite how cutthroat the used Tacoma market was. After 5 months of constant scanning and additional research I finally found and purchased the truck I wanted at a reasonable price - 2012 TRD Sport with apprx. 25k miles. Just been a week with it, but I've been very pleased so far. I'm hoping this might be the vehicle that I finally see an odometer turn over 200k on.

My plans so far are very light since I haven't spent much time with it, but they still owe a lot to this forum:

    1. Spacers on the front end to get everything level
    2. Sony AVX1000 head unit so I can have car-play
    3. The mod that fixes the position of your rear view mirror (makes it higher) that a user sells, can't recall the name at the moment.
    4. RAM A-Pillar phone mount
    5. New set of Michelin LTX A/2. I know this is probably not good value and going off course from what people on the forum think, but I approach cars the same way I do airplanes...if it gives you some certainty of quality then it worth the extra money, even if the product is not at the optimal spot on the price/efficiency curve. Your safety is at stake. Feel free to change my mind by the way, I'm obviously not an expert.

After all that is done I'll start ticking down the free/low-cost mod list I think.

If you're still with me at this point, thanks and have a good day!

edit: the first of many minor grammar fixes

    Welcome.

Nice. 25k is lightly used alright, about 4k a year. People are gonna want to know, so I might as well ask:
How much did you pay for it?

And I thought mine was lightly used, ha.
Back in late September I got a silver 2006 AC V6 PreRunner, 58k miles for $17,000.
New frame, excellent condition otherwise. Obviously babied and garage kept.
    Man, I love it.

The 4.0L V6 is plenty for me, and the transmission doesn't shift excessively.
If I'm driving in a hilly area, it's just a matter of putting it in 4.
I prefer doing without a load of electronic gizmos. Though I'll be getting an Ultra Gauge once I decide where I'll mount it.
I just retired and my Tacoma is perfect for me. I'm hoping it's my last vehicle.

What is it, I wonder with all the Silver Streak Mica 2nd gen Tacomas out there?
Now that I'm noticing them, there seem to be a lot out there, compared to other paint colors.

Anyway, yeah, this site is great for information. And entertainment. :p

    @Gritto

I don't mind sharing, $19,750 out the door, although I think I got screwed by about $500 or so on my trade so adjust that up to $20,250 if you're so inclined. I looked at a lot of comps in my area (I'm in central texas) and I can't decide if I got a good deal or not....it feels like 90% of the second gen trucks I've seen on the market here are 4x2 crew cabs so not many direct comps to go on. But most of those are 2013-15s with 50k+ miles and listed for $22-24k. Anything with four wheel drive is through the roof. I suppose all the Californian tech workers are driving the prices up!

Welcome, become familiar with the secondary air pump on your truck. Read about it on the forum. It has been known to be an issue.

@TacomaSport86 Thanks man, exactly the type of thing I was looking for. Already ready a couple of threads. Looks like it could be a little pricey if it crops up!
