Glad to find this thread! I’ve never tried archery, but I got my kid a crappy toy bow that came with equally crappy arrows while we were on a recent camping trip. I have a health condition that causes me to cramp up and get really stiff, and whenI was fooling around with it, it really felt good on my arms and back. So, want to get myself something for target shooting. What do you need to know to help me get rolling?

you need to get your draw length measured. then set a price you want to spend. It also depends if you are just wanting a traditional style bow or compound. Lots of other variables, arrow size/type, broad heads, sights etc...

Where would I do that? Should I go to a cabellas or bass pro, or would I do better to find a specialist?

Guessing traditional because it seemed to be the work of drawing that felt good. Compounds are easier draw right?

You can get started at a Cabelas/basspro, but they are going to want you to spend $1000 for their high end bow, then $500 in accessories...Id get measured at a bass pro then if theres a smaller bow shop near you go there and check out what info they have.

depends on the poundage of bow and cam let off/release. Are you going to try hunting someday? A compound bow with 80%let off and 50-60lb draw is easy enough to draw and plenty to kill a deer.

I may get into hunting but my focus for now is target shooting.

What does the draw weight represent? The amount of force on the string to fully draw?

Find a local archery shop and let them know what your intentions are. I think going to a smaller shop is better than the big box store because they will spend more time getting you set up to meet your needs.

basically, the peak pound weight on the bow string at full draw. On compound bows the newer ones have a cam release and depending on the % of release is what you actually feel at full draw once it goes past the cam break point at full draw. Thats the best I can explain it.

you can get 70lb draw bows, either traditional or compound...but really not necessary IMO. I hunt with my Mathews compound bow and it sits at 60lb draw. big difference between compound and traditional bow.

also compound bows you have to use a release of some sort, a couple are pictured below at the products discussed in this thread.

You don't have to use a release to shoot a compound bow but most do. I know several compound shooters that shoot fingers as do I.

Unless you’re Dan and Guy Fitzgerald they shoot fingers with their compounds.
