Lets see your tool boxes

I need a place to store all my stuff (air compressor, jumper cables, tow strap ect.) and have decided I need a toolbox. Using my backseats is no longer cutting it because I need to be able to move people if need be.

I'm leaning towards a UWS box because of their reputation. I only really want a low profile box in black. Not a fan of the chrome and I don't want to cut down on my rear visability.

Lets see some toolboxes!

I went a slightly different route. I rarely need to transport long or really big stuff (compressor, shovels) locked up. I decided to make something that would fill my needs water tight, sturdy, not take up too much room, easy to remove when needed. I took two large ammo cans and using bolts with wing nuts attached them to the bed rails. I've since installed locks and a bike fork mount, sealed the holes and weatherstripped the lid. I need to take pictures. I'll eventually paint them but the brown military look has grown on me, and their current appearance makes them less tempting to thieves. They have built in handles which have come in very handy and thanks to my use of clear silicone and weatherstripping are weather proof, even up to a pressure washer. The gap between them is great for long items like tables or plywood. And the gap is just right to fit a 5 gallon gas can. I paid under $20 for 4 cans and the hardware to mount two. I might setup the other two later on to mount on the sides if I need more room, doubtful.

i really like this idea. looks pretty damn good man. if i had them, i'd probably use bed liner material on them, but thats just me.

 

With wing nuts and bolts in the rails. In the second photo you can see them, I think they are 3/8" or 1/2". The trick is to use square washers and tack (or even glue) the bolt heads to the washers so they don't spin. The photos are from test fitting them. For now I just used silicone on the bolt holes to seal them but when I take them out for paint I will make some rubber gaskets, I trimmed down the bolts. I was worried about flex but these are solid, they originally help 3 81mm cartridges, 57 lbs. Capacity for each is just a little more than 2 12 packs of coke.

 

those ammo cans are brilliant! i like the look. plus in my case there's still room for a bike's tire to fit in between ....and talk about low profile!

if i get an ol' beat up apocalypse truck , i'll remember that trick.

with your newer ride, i bet those would look bad-ass with some bedliner on them!
as it is, i still think the sheer ingenuity makes up for whatever clash they have up against a new truck.

 

Thanks. I am leaning toward the bed liner. Was thinking to paint them silver but after Phantom's experience I think black will be good. The boxes are galvanized so when I paint them I'm going to do a lot of prep work, otherwise the paint will flake off (like the original brown has done in a few places.


Forgot to mention...I hate painting. Painted my old VW bug and that started me down the path of not ever wanting to paint...

 

yeah, i think the bedliner will be very durable.....more so than paint too, plus the prep work for using the liner material isnt too bad.

 

If I were to paint these I'd completely strip them, use etching primer since they're galvanized, and then give them 3+ coats of black enamel, no clear coat so touch-up would be easy. If I go with bedliner paint I'll still need to strip it to metal, maybe I can bypass the primer, depends on what the manufacturer says. When I get around to it I'll post pics. Might wait until summer, painting indoors isn't fun.

 

There is your solution if your cheap, like me. Also if you hate the thought of permanently giving up your bed length, like me.

 

yeah, i did the same sort of thing. i went down to wally world and picked up a box for about 50bucks if i remeber right. it fits all kinds of crap and i can easily pull it out if i want to. i'll try to get a pic and throw it on here later.

 

I know it cost $450 bucks but you will not find a better box than the Toyota one. The best part is you can buy parts for it at your local dealer. I lined mine with carpet and I love it.
