Has anyone experienced rust around windshield seem/roof?

I have a 07 with really low mileage (less than 55,000). Its always been a southern california truck and I plan on keeping it a long time.

Now I have had a lot of tacomas; three different 2nd gens and two 1st gens. I've never dealt with this before.

Im seeing a very slight section of rust formed, it lines up with the middle of the windshield right where the seal meets the roof of the truck. Its nothing crazy yet and I want to stop it before it becomes a problem, but has anyone else dealt with this?

Im a little upset that with a truck in a dry environment with low miles im having to deal with this, hoping its not a problem that will come back in the future.

Should I have a body shop pull the windshield, grind down the affected area to the sheet metal, and repaint just that tiny section?

 

Not sure how to repair but my buddy eventually gave up his old tundra to this.

Caught it too late and wasn’t worth fixing. Ended up selling it being clear to the buyer why they were getting a steal.

 

Wow, this sucks. I have an 06 as well w/frame rust. (I'm in Ca but truck from mid west) I've had it here 5 yrs. Tomorrow I will take a close look at the windshield. I'll let you know.

 

Yeah its a really small spot, im talking about maybe the size of two BB pellets. Im confident I caught it in time. I talked to the dealership today and they said theres no recall or tsb for that sort of thing (it was worth a try)

 

Ya, got some rust right there too. Even noticed water leaking through one time only.
'08 in northern Ontario salt, so no surprise there. If it gets worse, I'll fix it as best I can, and seal with silicone.

 

I had this issue with my 07. I had an auto body shop fix and for around 1000 bucks OTD and I was happy again.

 

Salt/air from the Ocean is your problem.

 

OP, has your windshield ever been replaced Or is it still factory?

 

I was thinking the same thing. If a careless windshield repair cut the paint when cutting out the old windshield boom = rust.

This is very common with crappy windshield installers.

 

Exactly what I was thinking. Seen it happen before with some of the big name companies in my area. That's why I asked.

Not sure on price. The windshield in my truck had just been replaced the day before I bought it by safelite. All the way home I kept hearing a wind noise. Luckily I have a good friend that's been in the glass business over 30 years so he pulled it to replace it. Come to find out there was a gap in the glue so it was never sealed. Also about 4" in from the top corners, the glass actually sat above the metal. It all got some knocked off the price which covered my "friend" deal for a new piece of glass and the proper install. Now I know everything is primed and glued properly. Long story short, id say that's the problem. The paint was knicked while cutting out the glass and never primed properly.

 

Fingernail polish enamel is a quick fix for the area you are mentioning.

Have the same issue on my 09 and I think that the rubber seal is to big and is rubbing on the metal.
I removed the rust with the tip of a flathead screwdriver and painted over it. Have to see how long it will last.

Maybe shortening the rubber lip with a razor blade a little bit will prevent it from happening again.
