Ahhh, blended vs overcoat clear. So, the non-metallic colors have thinner overall coat? Is there any info on the thickness differences?

Correct, learned this after owning my 15 Super White, have been buying the metallics ever since. Not sure on thickness difference, maybe someone can chime in.

no, the non metallic colors aren't thinner. they simply don't have a clear coat applied over top of them. Toyota calls their process a "mid clear" which is horse shit. you can't mix clear coat with a paint coat and call it clear coated. paint doesn't work that way. if they mix anything in the paint it is an enhancer, that is all, period. it is not clear. ask any GOOD paint and body man about mid clear and see what they tell you. they will probably laugh you out of their building. Ford used this same method in the early 90's and their paint was absolute garbage. the single stage paint that Toyota uses is actually very good. as are most single stage paints. they are very forgiving when it comes to scratches and whatnot. also they are very forgiving when it comes to detailing. as long as you don't let them get too far gone. you can usually restore them to like new luster without a whole lot of work.

I agree with most of what you said, Except for the part where you say it’s actually very good. I say it’s ... ok. I was pressure washing it (18 to 20 inches away) and it took off paint on my passenger door. Down near the right bottom where the orange peel is. Ok. It happened. But if it were a hardened 2 stage, that wouldn’t have happened. Besides, sitting next to my wife’s 2015 pearl white charger, the finish blows my Tacoma’s away.

Toyota is the gold standard of engineering and QDR, I'm trying not to question, but question the paint from what I've seen / heard.

Toyota clearcoat all colors but super white. They don't clear that white, however they do mix the clear into the super white color coat.

damn, that sucks. I would probably be livid about that actually. yeah I agree with other paint finishes being superior too. my wife's pearl white Lexus and my daughter's pearl white Jeep blow my single stage white paint away. the Lexus especially. that paint is butter smooth with zero orange peel anywhere.

Even my mom's FCA Granite Crystal Rubicon's paint looked better than my 2017 Magnetic Gray. But I'm not an expert that's just from the small time I spent decontaminationing / clay baring and washing both when new.

I think some manufacturers just get away with painting their vehicles as cheaply as possible. use as little paint as possible for coverage and let it ride. if you think Toyota paint is bad, try a Nissan or Subaru. both of those manufacturers paint is honestly the worst I have ever seen. Nissan edging Subaru out slightly for absolute worst. we owned a 2016 Nissan Murano for 9 months, yes, 9 months. It was Platinum Metallic, garage kept and hand washed once a week, EVERY week. within those 9 months the front end was beat to shit with rock chips and road debris and the clear coat was so dull it wasn't funny. that was our last Nissan product. we won't own another one.

I would NEVER pressure wash a vehicle. I can't imagine a scenario where it was needed that hand labor couldn't achieve.

I doubt that when people vote no-VOC paints is what they are thinking about when citing. Even though what youre saying is correct it's a retarded thing to come up with and say in this thread

Give it a break man. Guess what... all the OEM's buy their paint from the same places. The paint companies tell them how to mix and apply it. The OEM'S decide how much to put on and prep and dry though. Personally, my paint is no better or worse than any other vehicle I have ever owned.
If you don't want your paint to chip you have two choices... Don't drive it or put some type of protection (screen, bra, chip guard, bed liner, clear bra, cardboard) on it. Otherwise, your paint is gonna chip and the more miles you go, the more it's going to chip. They all do it.

EXACTLY. Don't follow semi trucks , huge lifted trucks or a truck carrying a load. I tell the wife same thing. Her 4yr 4Runner has *one* small chip following those 3 rules. I always keep touchup paint from dealer handy.
You all know rocks can crack glass. Just be cautious what you follow.

Yep, I was super paranoid and did the same, even was avoiding the HWY, but still ended up with a chip 500 miles in. Oh well. Hopefully PPF will help mitigate some of the damage in the future.

Well that’s personal preference. But no, it didn’t need pressure washed or have that kind of level of cleaning. I pressure washed it cause I PW’d the drive way and gonna wash the cars. It was there. Easy as that. But in no way should it have taken paint off at that distance. I detailed cars (cadillacs to be exact) for a living years ago and never have I seen it happen. But whatever. It did. Not crying about it.

Are you sure about that or is that confirmed because cement has metallic in it.
