New Calif vehicle noise ordinance AB1824

Any of you guys with loud exhaust on your trucks or cars might want to watch this video

Basically any vehicle or Motorcycle 1976 or newer must comply with 95db sound level measured from 20" away from the exh tip . Test is measured in two different tests , from idle and the other at 2500rpm . Both of these tests if you're above 95db's you're illegal

It is no longer a fix it ticket , it's now a $1k fine and a trip to a referee station

Doing more research this isnt a new law , in fact this law is as old as 15yrs old . It used to be only a fix it ticket offense and now this new law anyone that's in violation can be fined up to $1k . But the 1rst time offenders will be fined $25

Also all vehicles under 6k lbs and bikes are to comply with this law .Even though the verbiage states you will be tested during the traffic stop not all law enforcement will have DB Meters to measure your exh .its up to the individual officers discretion if he's going to pull you over or not

So your car will definitely be affected by this? I imagine if you get pulled over that will not be the only ticket you get. My Tacoma will probably be fine but my bike or diesel may not do so well. Actually the bike has a “Q” silencer on it do it should be ok but the second generation dodge 5.9 Cummins is just loud! I do have a muffler on it but I’d be afraid of what the dB might be. This law was probably written specifically for the Harley guys with loud pipes. I hear that smog tests on motorcycles is around the corner.... oops I’m sorry I just dropped your bike. This state needs to be sued!!!

Hopefully not but plan on pulling the one chamber flowmasters off and going back to the two chamber mufflers just to be safe

It was much quieter with the two chamber mufflers!!

 

What year is that car? Pre 1976 so exempt?

 

There's pretty much no reason to live in California if you like working with vehicles. That said, I'll make sure my land cruiser and 300zx are as loud as possible while I pass through.

Last night, the Irvine PD Traffic Bureau received information that a car club, suspected of engaging in street racing, may be gathering in the city. IPD Traffic officers, joined by our partners at OCSD, CHP, and UCI PD, conducted patrols of the area and found several hundred people associated with the club gathered at a local shopping center. While in the area, Officers and Deputies made over 80 traffic enforcement stops for various violations, conducted 28 vehicle inspections looking for illegal modifications, wrote 56 citations, and ordered 20 vehicles to be inspected by the state Bureau of Automotive Repair for further inspection and correction of illegal modifications. We are working hard on a daily basis to keep Irvine safe!

 

Keeping people safe, my ass. Whole state is up its own ass with pointless legislature, it's beyond repair at this point.

 

I've even heard of DMV inspectors dressed like car show spectators going to well known car shows like Bob's Big Boy classic car show in Burbank Ca . A friend of mine recieved a notice a week later after his car was there at this show . This notice said questionable modifications done to the motor

He has a newer LT1 Motor swap which is smog legal in his early 70's Vette

Here's an update that clears up the confusion of AB1824 and Christian Robinson who is SEMA's Director of State Government affairs answers questions

What I'm liking but will need more clarification is Christian when asked about 75 and older cars states these are emissions exempt and can only be cited for noisy exhaust or over 95db's
