A good test drive will answer a lot of your questions. Then you can draw your own conclusions on the matter.

I owned both. It's not in your head.

If you drove a pre-TSB vehicle, it definitely was not in your head.

I drove a MT 2007 for ten years. The pre-tsb engine tune was really weird.

After driving with the new tune for almost 4 months now, I can safely say the difference might be your head if the car did have the new tune.

2nd Gen will never keep up with a 3rd once moving on the road and higher rpm is available. 2nd Gen is a tad faster off the line but that's where it ends.

You better get the manual tranny if you get a 3rd gen, the auto tranny is no Bueno.

Can't speak for the auto, but that certainly doesn't hold true for the M/T - especially 04B10 to 04B13!!!

3rd gen mt is 2250 rpm at 65mph. It is slightly under geared. The fuel mileage really suffers over 70mph. I wish they would have offered the option for 3.91 rear end, since the transmission has better 5th and 6th ratios than th AT, it would have been ideal.

That being said, it's only very slightly under geared. Search this forum for 3rd gen gear ratios. Someone posted the ratios, and they are improved from 2nd gen, so it should be running lower revs at any given speed in 6th.

Me too. It was a bit of an adjustment coming from an F250, but I really like the way it drives now.

Can I just ask for the TSB when I take my truck in?

Different strokes for different folks. Some dealers will load the TSB for manual transmissions, some won’t. Toyota fudged the TSB docs up, so even through TechStream will see an update, they may not load it because the documentation doesn’t readily it applies to your specific vehicle. Best bet if finding someone local with a cable and buying them a six pack for their troubles.

Both engines are gutless. The 4.0L is the new 1G as far as nostalgia goes. Rev higher and your problems go away. TSB helps a lot too.

I've gotta go in for a 20k miles service pretty soon. I may just ask and see what they'll say.

It may be in my head, but my '03 V8 Tundra that I sold recently seems very much like my '18 Tacoma when pulling a trailer or open road. Love both for what they were/are. Very satisfied with my '18, period and has had no updates or engine/tranny modifications since purchased 15k miles ago.

Yes. Just describe some symptoms and tell them you’d like the TSB loaded and they should do it. Or, they are a bad service department and try to fight you in it.

Print the TSB up from the thread and highlight the MT ECU codes. They can figure it out. Or not. Dealer service departments are a toss up. Best of luck ..

In the fall my dealership wouldn’t update mine, but honestly I don’t really have any drive you nuts issues, except the squeaking clutch pedal. It’s an easy fix, but I am still making the dealership deal with it while in warranty.

Ask the dealer specifically if techstream shows an update for your truck and if not have them print out the page.

The tech who did the work is also a member here at TW, so I am sure he did everything they would let him.

My dealership told me "we'll check if theres a tsb out on it, but just because some guy on the internet said its there doesnt mean its true" so I said, "ok please check and let me know" they ended up doing it, but continued to push the "we dont have to do it" attitude
