Still one of the best trips I have been on! That and the Maine trip which was very different - small group, faster pace vs a HUGE group and relaxed pace.

Still upset you didn't take out the newborn snowman. Not enough risks were taken on the way out.

Time to sand, condition and stain my ceiling wood. More than I had in my head when I came down this morning but still way better than paying someone else to do it!

Are you staining/painting them, or just putting a coat of polyurethane on and calling it good?

You should ask for an oil suit, we have them in compliance with OSHA for this purpose.
Then at least you keep your van clean.
That suck man, at least it didn't end up in your mouth!

    Lots of steps for this
    1)light sand
2)wood conditioner so it doesn’t take up too much if stain-then wipe off extra
    3)stain and wipe
    4) sanding sealer
    Put up
    5)light sand
    6)one coat oil based poly.

For the trim and doors same process but one coat of poly before installation then another after most the finish work is done to clean up any marks.

A lot of work but should look good and last. Here is a shot after stain, I will have to do the sanding sealer tomorrow after it dries.

Edit: If you look at the spots that took the stain really dark (but aren't knots) that's what the whole board looks like without putting the conditioner down on the pine first. Harder wood wouldn't need it I don't think, but without it you can't see the grain at all on the wood we are using.

Why oil based poly vs water based?

    Just trying to learn...

Yeah, I've done pine V-match before and it's a challenge to get the stain coat even if you don't put the conditioner on first. I'm assuming you're blind nailing?
Do your boards span the entire ceiling, or are you chamfering the butt ends?

It may not be his particular reason why, but oil-based poly will yellow/darken over time and will develop a warmer, richer tone whereas water-based will be basically the same color forever. That's generally the reason people would use one or the other.

Nice work, now that is all he and his wife will be able to see in the ceiling. Might as well call it a "winking board dog" ceiling.

Chamfering the butt ends, some of the longer ones will be cut to fit the space as needed.

@Subway4X4 As far as oil vs water, @Noelie84 is right about the coloring, we want a warm darker feel, everything in the house is going to have a darker feel and that helps. I also think it has a more durable finish, that could be only in my head though and based of oil poly propaganda :der: But I think there is some truth to it. I think water is harder, but the thickness/softness of the oil based stuff is a plus for me with dogs running around.

Oil smells more and dries slower, and water is faster and more expensive. My cousin has a wood cabin and they use water based because they like lighter stains and colors than my wife and I. Neither one is wrong, the color tone is probably the most important thing to consider since the oil could change the color of the wood to something you don't like.

As far as the dog, I actually pointed that out to the wife, I thought it was a guy with a big nose tho! Dog probably fits better and would explain the big nose

 I am here to help

    Wait, no, that's not right...

My parents have their living room done in all v-match pine and used oil for the same reason. They put it right onto the bare boards without any stain and ended up with a very nice honey-blonde color after a few years of aging.
