Going to be buying this 05' Tacoma, Crewcab 6 speed.

Found a 2005 SR5 6 Speed Manual Crew Cab close by to me. It has had 2 owners but the carfax is clean. It has 63,718 miles.

The dealer want's $19,989 or best offer. I figure I can talk him down to 18 easily. Maybe more.

I hardly drive 10k a year so it's not like I'm going to be bringing it to 100k any time soon. I just hope it's not going to end up costing me money to keep it running.

What are the chances that it will eventually need expensive work done?

Search "throw out bearing" and "05 motor mounts" on here before you make your decision.

I bought my 06 Access Cab 4x4 6 speed with 41k on it back in December. I paid 17,500 for it.

My throw out bearing started squeaking during a road trip last month. It has stopped for the time being, but I know I will have to fix it eventually. The guys at the dealer are treating me like an idiot, and claiming they have never heard of the problem. I am certain I will be fixing it on my own.

That price is too high.

 

It's a Toyota Certified Vehicle... if that means anything at all I don't know. My brother is a mechanic and I'll have him come along when I test drive it.

I figure I could ask 17,000 for it, and end up getting it for 18.

Check the motor mounts!! The truck has been sold to dealerships many times from other dealerships, and only two owners.

 

Make sure you fully understand what that certified vehicle warranty covers. I don't think it's going to cover problems with motor mounts (frame) or clutch (wear item).

Not saying this particular truck will absolutely have these issues, but it is common enough you should understand what you may be buying.

Taking a mechanic along is always a good idea. I am a fair mechanic myself, but that did me no good as far as the throw out bearing noise on my truck is concerned. It wasn't there when I bought it, and I didn't do enough reading beforehand, so I was unaware of the problem.

I just drove mine 4,000 miles last month, and although it's not perfect, it is a damn nice truck to drive.

Do not lose perspective that you are going to be buying a 5-6 year old truck.

Might want to get the frame checked for any excessive rust. Especially if it has been through New York winters all those years.

 

Anybody have an idea on why this could be? It's been passed across a couple of states already, building mileage while not even being owned.

If the Throw Out Bearing is bad, is that something costly to replace?

 

The dealerships traded it to each other and they probably drove it between the dealerships.

 

Something then is going on with that truck. A Tacoma would sell anywhere it is traded in if everything is kosher.

It looks like in between the 2 owners, the car was driven around a couple of times. Then after the 2nd owner gave it up, it was again.

This is crazy.

 

x2. Too pricey for that yr/mileage. Don't go over $17K. Does seem odd to be owned by 2 buyers but yet passed around by several dealers. Wouldn't you think if you are a dealer that this truck would be an easy sell instead of sending it off to auction several times? If you have any doubts or suspicions, I would be patient and check on CL or even here on TW for deals. Good Luck..

 

I'd run away from that one. If you know anyone in the car business I'd ask them why so many dealers have had it. And be sure to run the Carfax on any you're looking at.

 

Yeah... stay far away. There must be a reason its getting passed around so often. You should really just wait it out, another one will come along without such a sketchy history.

Price is no longer the issue. The issue is future dependability. With it being swapped around like that, there is doubts to it's dependability. Then it does not matter how cheap you get it if the thing grenades and cost you money.

Had this been 10 years ago, that changing hands outline would be a classic case of trying to scrub a salvage title for a clean title.

 

I think it was swapped around so much because it's a 5 speed manual, and hard to sell... but either way I'm going to call the dealer and find out.

If this car had so many previous owners... wouldn't they of already put money into it and repaired whatever needed to be repaired?
