rear end growling after dealer chg fluid...!!

2008 Taco dbl cab, long bed. 64,000 miles

Took truck to dealer cause grinding sound when turning slow speeds.

Dealer says checked diff fluid and it was broke down, needed changed.

I said to dealer....but didn't you just change the diff fluid at 60,000 miles only two months ago ? He says...."no we only checked the level".

So he changed the fluid and added LSD additive. This helped and ALMOST took all the grinding sound out but not completely. It still grinds.

I go home and check my receipt from two months ago at 60,000 miles and the dealer had charged me for rear diff fluid and LSD additive service. Owners manual says it is supposed to be changed at 60,000 miles and I was charged for this service but apparently it was never done.

So I complained and they gave me my $$ back for the service done only a few days ago.

Freakin' dealerships !!

Anyway..........the rear end is still grinding some.

Any help or opinions greatly appreciated.

You had a few typos I took care of it for you.... Good job on getting your money back. You should of asked them to show you how to check the fluid level.

 

Mmmm that's not good. I've heard using the wrong fluid can produce odd sounds. What differential do you have? LSD? E-Locker?

 

It's LSD rear end. And as for what oil they used ? Probably the cheapest money can buy.

Thanks for the typo fixes (stealerships). Man what a learning experience.

Now I just hope I can get the rear end fixed okay. Perhaps I should have a private mechanic take a look at it?

Could it be the front diff also ??

I don't trust the 'stealership' (as you put it) anymore. So I'm on my own and looking for a plan as to what next. So you know. I am no mechanic. None, nada. I know how to drive pretty good but that's about as mechanical as I get.

Chris is right. On my 07 I had the same problems and had to use 2 tubes of the BG additive. Just add a little more and then go to a deserted parking lot or field. Let the vehicle idle/go slowly as you make about 10 circles as tight as you can to the right. Then do the same making about 10 circles to the left. This will work the additives into the clutch packs on the LSD rear ends.

I went to a parking lot today and started some figure 8 circles. Only did a few but that seemed to help. I will continue. Whod-s-thunk....driving in circles would ever fix something ??!!

So far so good. I should finish up the circle driving tomorrow and hopefully that will fix the problem.

What a joke. Dealerships.

Don't forget to add a little more LSD modifier to the rear end and change the LSD fluid every 30,000 miles. PS: adding some rep would be great.

Okay...just went to a parking lot.....spun in circles 10X both directions slowly.

It works every time. Remember, the friction modifiers in the gear lube break down pretty fast so change it at least every 30,000 miles. You can do it yourself and save a ton of money.

Its not tricky, its just Toyota had forgot to include clear directions for it. I guess they did not want to mention GM or Ford additive in their instructions. It would not look good I guess.

 

There are tons of modifiers out there. One dealership will use synthetic oils & one type of modifier, while another dealership will use dino oil and another type of modifier.

What they don't mention - is what type of modifier. Like, type?
Every oil or grease you use on/in your vehicle has a type - API standards, etc. They don't mention 'how much to use' either.

 

Maybe it's because Eaton won't even give a recommendation (at least to me) on the type of oil or modifier, only that it should be a mineral based oil and friction modifier should be used. Although you'd think that Eaton would be more willing to share info with Toyota.

If you ask me the problem is with Eaton. I think they got themselves into trouble by making a recommendation that didn't work out and now they won't make any.

 

Ok but eaton does not produce anything that remotely looks like that LSD, hence I dont think its Eaton. Original factory one on tundra, mounted i n the same diff, where produced by HINO

 

So we talking about 2 different LSD's then? I was under the impression that the clutch type LSD used by Toyota are the Posi units built by Eaton which use carbon clutch packs.

The one I plan on putting in is built by Eaton. I assumed that since the TRD Kazuma LSD's were made by Eaton, that the stock ones were too.

How is the Hino LSD different?

Good info there. So OEM is 4 pinion and Eaton aftermarket is 3 pinion. I would think that the extra pinion would make the OEM stronger too, although both Hino and Eaton make products for heavier duty trucks so I'd hope they know what they're doing.

Too bad Toyota can't service their own LSD's right sometimes.

 

Yeah.... It's a no wonder they got rid of them and went with Auto LSD.
