$625 negotiated down to $550: ‘72 El Camino. Like many, would love to have my first car back now.

Maybe he paid 50% down and 36 months, who knows. At 18, you have time to make a few mistakes and memories... sometimes they go together. And perhaps it’ll be paid off in 3 and he’s payment free for then next 10 years.

Have at it OP!!! Could do much worse than a Tacoma for practicality.

Student loan debt before the age of 25? Who needs it. You've got car loan debt! Lol. Congrats on the new car. You made a wise decision.

Debt isnt worth the new truck imo. Be careful, i knew two girls who had this bite them at a young age. One had a repo, and another had to file for bankruptcy. Anything can happen in life and you could lose your job before you know it. Not trying to be super negative, just dont want you to get into serious finanical trouble (even though i dont know you lol)

    Welcome to TW

My first vehicle was a '79 Jeep CJ7 with the 304 and a 3 speed. Bought it for $2000, great times were had in that thing. Then a couple years later a '83 Toyota 4x4 pickup came in to my life and it was over. Other than 3 years with a mustang I've been driving Toyota trucks since.

He didn’t say afford. He said $500/month.

Rich people don’t finance cars, they pay cash.
Making a $500 payment a month at 18 seems nuts to me.

$500 a month is like a 72 month loan unless he put a chunk down. Lot can happen in 6 years.

Yep, I work in a research lab and the university went on strike for a little while a few months ago, and no professors present, no job. If i had a car payment on top of my other bills i would've been boned. Just managed to scrape by until it reopened.

    500 x 72 is $36,000.

He had to put a chunk down just to cover the interest.
