i forgot to ask.....do you think the GE Mega's +130 give off usable light than the Hylux set-up? which would you recommend

 

The GEs are ~1300 lumen and achieve higher intensity projection by using more precise smaller filaments. HIDs are not optimized for the halogen projector though they are not horribly far off compared to LEDs but they have a vastly higher 3200 lumen output. Thief hot spot ends up being much smaller than a halogen but they are going to put out much more light.

I’ve not tried the Hylux HIDs, but comparing XDs house brand vs Philips brand there was a 25% output improvement with the Philips, even though the specs were about the same.

The GEs don’t look that pink in person, just the HID intensity is affecting the photo color a bit.

One of the things people often do not account for is overly bright lights with sharp cut offs makes an extreme light contrast where it is actually difficult to see beyond the cut off, so while you headlights are very bright your eyes constrict and are limited in their ability to see past them.

 

And everyone says real performance H9s don't exist.




So far I have found what look to be 4 different seemingly legit performance H9s. I'll be testing to see if any can outperform the GEs when they arrive.

 

that will be great....ill still have both set-ups (HID & Halogen)....easy to change back to HIDs or place H9s in if better than the GEs.....boy, has retirement caught up to me...Indecisive about lights, but I'm giving myself a chance to learn and play around.....cheaper than going on vacation....heheheh

If you want to use your headlights as actual headlights, say no to the first 3. LEDs do not project. Between the two, HIDs are vastly superior, not because of raw output, but because of being more compatible with the optics. See my post on the first page for the comparison.

 

More importantly I want to see how they do in the stock high beams.

Will do if they prove any better on low beams. Measuring high beam intensity is a bit more challenging as the light is so distributed it is more difficult to find 'the hot spot' for a lux measurement. High efficiency bulbs are also not as effective on a highly distributed beam as a concentrated low beam one. So while there would likely be an improvement, it won't be to the same extent as the low beam, which is likely why almost no companies make a higher efficiency high beam bulb.

And that Philips Vision +30 H9 is seemingly very difficult to come by. Some companies that ship from Europe have started subbing the standard Philips bulbs.

If you are referring to putting LEDs into your halogen fog reflectors, yes. If you want to run LED fogs, you need LED housings as covered here:

Just to add to the discussion-- the Philips +100's were a huge/noticeable upgrade in my 2014 Tacoma with reflector housings. But in my 2018 4Runner with projectors, the difference from OEM bulbs wasn't nearly as dramatic.

 

4runners have a different side-entry headlight, vs rear entry on the Tacoma. Regardless the GE +130s are lightyears ahead of the Philips +100s.

 

I'm wanting more light in the ditches to watch for deer. Would this be an unwise "upgrade" in the fogs?

My biggest concern is affecting other drivers.
