Hey guys, I'm trying to pull my passenger side fender. After wrestling for an hour trying to remove all the seized bolts, I finally got them all off. Now I can't figure out how to separate the Antena base from the fender. Here's a pic of what I'm dealing with. Thanks in advance.

Alright, I got it. Didn't go as I hoped, but at least I got the fender off. For anyone who has this problem and finds this thread in the future, here's what I did.

You can see in the above pic that the retaining ring was disintegrated. So, had to slowly cut through what was left of the base until it was free and fell down the hole.

    Screenshot_2019-01-15-12-23-31.jpg Screenshot_2019-01-15-12-23-38.jpg Screenshot_2019-01-15-12-23-44.jpg

The threads got a little janked up, and I don't know how many parts I'll have to replace yet, but I can move forward with the project. Who listens to the radio any more, anyway?

I’d replace it with a universal stubby antenna.

I need to figure out the proper way to remove the antenna base too. My little retaining ring was all rotted away too so I thought I could get rid of that and just put a new ring on but the threads are messed up too. I stopped before mine ended up like yours! Surely there has to be a way to remove it without having to hack the shit out of it!?

Yup, looks familiar. Mine's in 3 pieces now, no going back. I'll look up replacement parts at some point and post the part numbers.

Thanks @zero4 ! I remember seeing that post a while ago. I still cant figure out how the black plastic thing (ornament?) is attached. Is it pressed/fitted over the top of the threaded piece? Does it come up from the under side of the fender? It felt to me like there was a lip on the under side of the fender that was holding it place. I couldn't pull it up or push it down. I'd rather not spend $60 or $70 on a new antenna base if I dont need to!

The black ornament is held in place by the antenna nut. If you look at my first pic above, you can see what's left of it (silverish part just above the black ornament).

So I had to cut the ornament to gain access to what was left of the nut to get it out.

    20190115_155433.jpg

But in your pic it doesn't look like much of it is left. If there is ya gotta get it all out. Then the black ornament should just come straight up & off. It could be just stuck on there really good but it's only the antenna nut that holds it in place.

@ireymon Ya no lip on the bottom of the ornament.

This is exactly what I was wondering. Looks like I need to get an ornament and a nut and then go to town on the little bastard!

It could just be debris & stuff causing it to be the stuck. IIRC the inside bore of the ornament fits the antenna mast fairly snug. Also you shouldn't have to worry about the antenna assy falling into the fender after taking off the ornament. There's a bracket holding the antenna assy in place assuming it's not broken. It's kind of flimsy though. If you open your passenger door you can see it (assuming you still have your wheel well covers on).

Damn @zero4 that's a whole lot of kick-ass! Thank you. Now to figure out if I can salvage the tube that's inside the fender and just get everything from the ornament up, or if I'm really gonna drop some coin.

    No problemo. :D

It looks like you still might be able to still use your antenna assy even with those slits cut into it. They may actually help clean up the threads. Old mechanic's trick is to cut slots on a bolt to act as a thread chaser. That's what I did to the new antenna nut.

I first used a dremel with a wire wheel to clean up the threads as much as I could. Then I used a pick and a razor blade to pick out what the wire wheel couldn't. Then the slits on the antenna nut cleaned up the rest. If you do need/try the slits trick, be sure to screw it on & off a little at a time like if using a thread tap to help clear the crap out. The antenna nut socket is really helpful for doing this but you don't really need it. Forgot to mention, if you buy that #4 Lisle antenna socket needs the prongs to be filed ever so slightly to fit, really quick & easy to do.

Hopefully you don't have replace the entire antenna assy. That's what I was scared of cause I really didn't want to have to mess with running the new cable all the way to the headunit.
