Hey TW, I've noticed that my 2017 TRD OR dbl cab does not immediately switch from 4wd to 2wd...I drove the other day in snow using my 4H setting and when I parked at work, I switched it back to 2WD. The 4WD indicator on the dash just blinked and I never hear a switch in the glove box area like I normally do. I tried putting in in drive only to hear a "thump" as I pulled forward. This disengaged the 4wd. Any takers? I heard its not preferrable to use the 4wd on flat ground...is that really what is causing this? I should also note, that I've had problems with my tires in the past and this issue last winter. I took it to toyota and they put four TRD sport tires on and the problem went away. They gave me four new tires and said the problem was solved, but it happened again this winter.

Engage and disengage while moving, not at a standstill.

Shift to and from 4 high while moving. Shift to and from 4 lo stopped in neutral after engaging 4 high.

As they said, 4wd really prefers to be engaged and disengaged while moving. I just lift my foot off the gas then turn the knob, and it’ll switch damn near instantly, sometimes with a clunk. That’s nothing to worry about.

You can use 4wd on flat ground. Its dry pavement where you gotta turn sharply you want to avoid in 4wd.

Okay, tested it out this morning.. Driving to work like normal, no speeds in excess of 40 mph. Flipped the dial to 4wd and it feels like it may have engaged, but the light for the 4wd is just blinking. The truck also feels like its kind of hard to control. If I had to maneuver, it would be delayed. Flipped the dial back to 2wd and its still blinking, it still feels like its in 4wd and I can't get it to stop blinking or return to 2wd.

Didn't post yesterday because didn't think it was applicable and I haven't really had a chance to try out the 4WD in a Tacoma yet.

But in my previous truck it sometimes took a while to switch between 4WD and 2WD too. I think the two tips or tricks were either to shift it into reverse and then go back into drive. And the other was to give a quick press of the gas, kind of like a blip of the gas pedal.

Can't remember the reasoning behind it. It might've been something about it not switching while the system was under load or something.

The 4WD system might be different then with the Tacoma but doesn't hurt to give it a try.

Not sure that's a normal function of a tacoma with 17k miles on it though, right?

Were you driving in a straight line? Did you lift your foot off the gas pedal for a moment as you tried to engage/disengage it?

Not necessarily a requirement but I find that it engages/disengages a whole lot easier that way.

During my 15 minute commute to work, it did not disengage and throughout the entire drive the 4wd light was blinking.

Yeah that seems odd. And you're just trying to go from 2hi to 4hi, or visa versa? Nothing to do with 4lo at the moment?

This part has me curious. So when you parked at work, were you on snow the whole time? Or if you were on dry pavement were you going straight or nearly straight the whole time you were parking? I don't know your parking situation, but I would expect several 90 degree turns into a lot/parking space, etc. If any of those turns are on dry pavement, it's not exactly great for the t-case.

for me i find it easier to make sure im coasting in straight line. I shift to neutral (even though you dont have to) and getting in and out of 4hi is quick and painless, the only time i hear a clunk is usually when my wheels are slightly turned.
