New Truck Lift Questions

Haha yea I heart ya. It’s hard gambling going out wheeling in a 35,000 - 40,000 dollar truck. Eventually I want to take mine to Moab and try it out on some of the lighter trails.

 

Take your lifted truck to the dealer with any kind of issue that they could tie to your mods and report back... The dealer absolutely will fght you.


Yeah but if you have any basic intelligence and aren't a pussy and the dealer isn't going out of biz soon you will win a brief fight....especially if you take it to the same place the dealer takes new trucks that they fully warranty but charge you $10K for the same stuff you can buy at the same place for $3600.

You should be skurred. You've had your truck for what 5 minutes? Maybe people who have been down this path already have some wisdom. Unless you think everyone else is a pussy and you're the smartest guy here... How many times have you been to the dealer for regular maintenance, warranty work, or a tsb? In 2 years I have been to the dealer with an issue 8 or 9 times. Maybe more.

The dealer typically will use any and all excuses to deny you. A tsb comes out about every 2 months for these trucks, even getting that or warranty work done becomes terribly difficult. Or you get told " that's normal" and the brush off. There are tons of these stories here for a reason.

 

You picked the wrong dealer then.

Not here to fight....you make valid points....doesn't mean we all wheel the same trail.....I've owned 5 Toyo trucks that's why I bought #6....I have bought and modified CORRECTLY several new cars and never had a warranty issue I couldn't work through, Peace to you and live a life from the approach the glass is half full....stuff will work out....TC

 

I'm more worried about the dealer using a 12 point socket! Be there done that

 

Again, I'm not saying this is just my experience.

Lots of guys have had to fight tooth and nail to get stock trucks fixed.

I'm ok with tackling issues that may arise....I will even be honest and report them if you are right and I've made a horrible mistake and bought a Toyota and then posted on a Toyota forum that I like and mod my Toyotas....sorry if I offended you guys by modding MY Fuckin' truck lol.

Congrats on the new truck!

I've been casually researching lifts since 23000 miles ago and honestly I see a few things pop up over and over again: (in no particular order)

- Talk to Marie at Headstrong Offroad.
- Your mileage is going to go to crap, especially if you get E-rated tires.
- Goodbye warranty. Though I know for a fact that if I have my dealership install it, those parts will be covered. That said, everything they're connected to will not be anymore.
- Might as well replace the needle bearing with the EKGS while you have everything apart.
- You'll want to decide what kind of weight you're going to put on the truck before you change your springs. I know this can be daunting, but think about if you're going to put a 1000lbs of bumpers, skids, and sliders, as the weight will affect your spring choice.
- If you're going to try and fit 285s, you'll most likely need to do a cab mount chop to avoid rubbing.
- 2.5" and above, you'll most likely need aftermarket UCAs (upper control arms).

Seem like a cool bunch of dudes. They practice recovery in every episode, so you'll gain some knowledge on how to winch, and get through certain obsticals. That said, they also have a "run it and gun it" philosophy with a lot of the challenges, and that results in more broken trucks than I'd personally want to deal with. Good entertainment nonetheless. I actually quite enjoy the cooking segments with Shaun.

I suggest leave the truck as is as far as the suspension, tires and wheels are concerned for a good break in period. Say 5,000+ miles or so. As it sits it is a very capable truck that will handle most all of the OR situations the average guy will put it through. Enjoy it, learn from your experiences. You'll have a better feel for what exactly you want to do. It's an expensive road to go down if you do some major mods and then change your mind. Minor mods like lighting, window tints, exterior cosmetics etc are not a problem as they are relatively inexpensive and can be undone fairly easily.

Took the advice, spending the next 5K-10K+ miles researching and dreaming instead of emptying the wallet. That being said, I still have a few questions and I want to make sure I understand.

1.) Anything over 2.5-3” of lift seems to need UCAs to be safe. If I got Fox 2.5 IFP Coilovers, and pushed them out to a 3” lift instead of 2.5”—and grabbed a good set of UCAs, what issues would arise (for moderate off-roading) that I am not seeing? I’m really hoping for 3” (that’s what she...)

2.) Since the truck is new, I don’t tow currently and I won’t ever have more than 300-400 lbs of guns/camping gear in the bed, is something like the Dakar AAL the best route? What advantage would I see by grabbing the Icon Minipack recommended by Accutune?

3.) Purchasing the Archive Garage Flip—what level of off-roading do I need to be doing to care about this?

4.) 1/4” spacer driver side a no-no for any reason? 3rd Gen still have lean? I imagine I can just adjust the coil (I think?) but since I still have no idea what I’m talking about...here we are.

This is my DD, so I don’t plan to add bumpers etc. I have zero intention of installing anything myself and am trying to get the best I can get for <$3,500.

Side Note: Thanks for being such a great community. These forums and all the replies on here have really helped me slow down and learn about something that fascinates me, but I knew nothing about instead of relying on one or two shops to sell me something I’ll regret later. If any of my questions are dumb, please tell me (and pls explain why). Thanks!!

My 2016 is rusting in the door sills. Not a spot on the frame and Toyota says too bad. They have a tab, but it was not put out till my truck was out of warranty by 6 months. Wtf Toyota. $1200 to fix and that's only the drivers sill.
