    Startup can be from $25 to hundreds. All in what you want it to be. At this point I’d say start with a DMR radio. Opens up a lot for you to start with.

    How good are you at studying and memorizing the actual test? :D

    Haha, I could probably procure a BaoFeng from somwhere.. Is there any other way to pass a test?

    I'm more curious as to how much of my RF knowledge will be relevant/handy..

    I mean, I don't want anything *too* shitty. I'd like to get something in my truck maybe. I'm not trying to bounce off the stratosphere to Australia or anything though.

    @deadpocketss

    Test $0-$15
    Radio $30 for a handheld. Optional mag mount for truck $28 ( gets way better reception and tx)

    I've got two of those Ailunce radios and a hotspot, a kenwood D710G mounted in the truck with a Comet 2x4 antenna on a ditch light bracket extender (soon to be mounted on my ARB bumper), and I've got a shitty baofeng in my recovery gear bag. That whole setup serves me pretty well.

    Okay, nothing too crazy then. If I brush up, I can probably take the Technician exam on the 2nd.

    I guess I'll just have to shop around for something above a BaoFeng and not as crazy as @Kheiron's set up. Cause, I don't have a grand sitting around.

    I really like my Alinco DJ-MD5GP but you can get the non GPS one for less. Just the MD-5. Does 2m/70cm and DMR. Screen is really nice on it too. Should be able to get one around $150

    There’s also a Raddiotty GD-77 that does the same thing. It runs around $90. I’ve had one of them too. Alinco is a lot nicer radio though.

    In the truck I’m running a D710 also so there’s that. Lol

    You can also get a nice mobile and compromise on the handheld. I use my mobile (truck) radio 95% of the time

    I'll check into those

    That's probably going to be what happens. I probably won't use a handheld too often.
