I kind of agree with @AugustaTaco in that Jager tastes more like black licorice. Even absinthe has a little of that flavor. Maybe what the person in the video was looking for was fennel. That has a bit of a black licorice taste, but more earthy/spicy than black licorice. That is something I can definitely see in rye. That or licorice root.

Bulleit Rye is a pretty popular one and inexpensive. Probably worth a go. Willett Family Estate 4 year is worth the few extra bucks over the 3 year. High West Double Rye is really nice, too.

If you get lucky enough to find a bottle of High West Midwinter Night's Dram on the shelf for $100 or down, grab it. It is finished in port barrels and has a sweet, floral note mixed with the rye spice. Might be the closest I can think of to imparting that black licorice type flavor. Their Yippee Ki-Yay is in the same ballpark, too (aged in wine barrels) and a little cheaper and easier to find.

The Knob Creek is good, but I love that Russell's Reserve 10 year!

So I have been keeping (or trying) to always have a bottle of the hibiki harmony in my shelf for a couple years now. One store in my area carries it and I typically buy a bottle every time I see it on the shelf. The week before Christmas I paid $65 one bottle per customer limit at the store. Seems to sell for 2x online.

I asked a friend to buy me another bottle the same day, he stopped by but decided to keep it for himself lol. Can’t blame him.

I've seen a few bottles of midwinter for $99 lately, maybe I'll give it a go. I just killed my bottle of American Prairie so it could fill that bottle's place...

It is good. I talked the wife into tasting the Whiskeys I've been buying over the past few months. She's always been a Tequila fan. She fell in love with Monkey Shoulder but didn't like any of the Bourbons I have other than she said she could tolerate the Booker's. I told her I was going to find her a Bourbon she would like some how to go along with her Monkey Shoulder. She tried the Russlle's Reserve 10 year and I think we have a winner winner chicken dinner!! I may now have to get my own bottle.

The ones I normally drink are Johnny Black, Macallans 12, Chivas Extra, Buchannans 18, always with club soda.

I agree with what the others say about rye - not really black licorice taste. Mainly I get a spicy peppery experience along with however the spirit was finished; i.e. Angels Envy rye is finished in barrels that started out with cognac, then used for carribean rum, then the rye. It's very sweet, almost a dessert wine. I really like it but it's not cheap and recently I started getting headaches while drinking it, so sadly I probably won't open the current bottle I have.

My favorite rye so far is Pikesville 110. Vanilla, caramel, bit of clove and a good hit of spicy, but no real heartburn in your chest. Few drops of water is all it needs.

Has anyone tried New Rif? I picked up a bottle of a barrel select one that a store did. Really enjoyed it. Curious what others think.

No, but I've REALLY been wanting to try it. Did you get the bourbon or the rye? I've heard good things, but couldn't give you a personal account of it.

It's the barrel proof bourbon. I say it's worth a try, good stuff.

Its alright, its got a slightly peatier "darker" (I refer to smells, sounds, colors, and flavors as lighter or darker), but I still drink black more than I do double.

How much does Elmer T. Lee usually sell for...when you can find it?? I was in a bar today and they had a full/unopened bottle on the shelf. Surprised me, but they had a great selection of good bourbon.

This has been a good trip to Tennessee. Down here for work and stopped by the Buffalo Trace facility Monday. I was able to finally track down 2 bottles of Eagle Rare while in Tennessee also. This stuff truly is rare in Ohio where I’m from. I have never actually seen a bottle of Eagle Rare on a shelf in Ohio and I’ve been checking. I’m real excited to have something to take home!!

That’s awesome that you found some! The crazy thing to me still is how easy it is to find around here, and how much difficulty other places have. Went to the biggest ABC store we have locally and they had a display full of BT and ER. No Whistle Pig or Compass Box to be found anywhere in the state that I’ve been though.

My go-tos lately have been the ER, High West Double Rye, and Michters American. Sprinkled in with some Macallan 12 here and there.

Monkey Shoulder is a very good blend. The other one I really like is Quiet Man, it’s a Irish blend Whisky. I read it’s made by Bushmills

It's about $45-50 if you get it from an honest retailer and are fortunate enough to see it on the shelf. I was lucky enough to have a bottle put aside for me by my local store. The owner felt bad for me, I think . I spent a lot in there for a raffle and came up empty. It is absolutely delicious stuff. Secondary, it trades for $100-120 or so. In a bar, I'm not sure what I'd expect a pour to cost? Those prices can vary wildly, but I'm guessing around $12-15 a pour?

Great haul and even better getting it straight from the source! I'd like to get up there sometime.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll keep my eyes peeled for a bottle.

I recently tried out a glass of Elijah Craig and was thouroughly impressed with it as a $30 small batch bourbon.

I'm a big fan of Middleton and Jameson 18. However recently I was introduced in to the world of Cognac and I may have to covert

I was impressed as was the person I was with who was not a straight alcohol drinker.
Its worth a try if youre ever out and see it at the bar.
