Unfortunately. I'll be doing 4.88s, bearings, seals, and a ratchet locker all at once

Did you do lockers at the same time, or still open?

This post is very helpful. Both my son and I have Tacoma’s and lifted Jeeps. He has just failed inspection for his lift. The garage could not tell him what the height should be. Our Jeep is not ready for the Road yet but I’m sure it will have the same problem. How do you find out what stock height is for this measurement?

Follow this, do the math using specs for your jeeps and you will be able to figure out allowable combined lift along with allowable tire size increase and suspension increase.

How can he fail your son for lift if he Didn't do the math to calculate the allowable lift for the truck according to Massachusetts law? And then after doing said calculation he would then have to take the appropriate measurements to ensure that you are actually in violation. Unless he can prove that you are in violation of the law he cannot fail you. Innocent until proven guilty!

So just got back from the inspection with a nice red R for claiming my exhaust is "slightly louder than stock". I just bout the truck in CT over the weekend, its a 05 4L TRD Off Road, all stock except for the exhaust. The exhaust is a 3in catback flow master. Its not even that loud. It rumbles what you stomp on the gas or try to drive in too low of a gear, but its not excessive. There are crappy civics with a louder exhaust than mine with passing stickers.

So i guess my question is what should i do? Since loudness is all subjective to the mechanic doing the inspection, should i just try going to a different shop, like one in Springfield, where they probably dont care as much about being slightly loud? Or should i actually invest in a different exhaust that is quieter? This exhaust came with the truck and i bought it out of state so i cant bring it back and make them change it. I also like the sound so i really dont want to revert it back to stock. Are exhaust silencers/inserts any good? anybody have luck using one of those to pass inspection?

Thanks for any help, Im just getting annoyed at all of Massachusetts bullshit car laws. Not one car ive ever owned has been 100% legal for inspection due to something stupid (exhaust too loud, windows too dark, license plate not clean enough, ect)

Won't matter with the R - most places will see it and likely repeat it because of the issue. Lately they have been audited more to follow enforcement, even my go to guy gave me a hard time about things on my truck. I likely won't pass next year but I don't really care since I plan on registering my vehicles to states that don't require emissions. In addition if you don't go back to the same place you wind up paying again. Looks like you just picked the wrong place and the wrong guy. Find a stock exhaust, swap it in and swap it back when you're done.

Yeah thats what i figured. I went to this place because its a small garage in a small town and everybody told me that the old guy that does inspections doesnt really care about exhaust or even tint as long as they arent obnoxiously failing. But he was caught and now that guy is no longer allowed to do the inspections and they are done by a kid with a bad attitude problem. I guess my best bet then is swap to stock for the inspection and i guess just have an extra exhaust for when this one rusts out.

I believe @tacobell007 had luck using a resonated exhaust tip. It quieted it down a bit, but he didn't have the rejection stick at that point. I had the same issue with my truck, I eneded up going back to a stock exhaust.

    Welcome to TW.

Glad I live in NH. As long as the check engine light's not on and your car's not a complete pile it will pass NH inspection.

Sucks they gave him the R since now it will come up in the computer. But if he just bought the truck, I'm assuming for more than $1,000 it has to pass MA inspection, especially if bought from a dealer

I feel pretty ignorant; never knew our neighbors to the north had to deal with this shit. CT is broke af, but at least we don’t have to deal with this crap.

I dont get why people worry so much about the exhausts, the TRD exhausts are probably equal volume to that flowmaster cat back. I was hassled for my muffler as well last year at 2 shops, where are you located around?

What if he bought it in CT though? At my dealer like you said when we do used cars we have to make sure it passes emissions and safety to atleast be a valu-line car.
