    hey i was just wondering if there are any EMS workers on here and if so could someone possibly get me a list of the codes used. I am in school to be a nurse and love listening to the scanner but i just have no clue as to what is being said half of the time. I have the 10-codes just not sure about the others. ex: 10 yr old boy fell off the bed and is code 30? thanks for any help you guys can give.

    God im glad im not a cop or private ambulance driver I could not memorize those. In out fire dept. I sometimes drive our ambu but I guess dispatch is nice to us. Good luck with nursing school im not far behind you.

    technically with the feds requiring everyone become NIMS compliant the 10 codes should be going away... i know around here we aren't allowed to use them at all anymore... the only exception is 10-4....

    there are ways around this...my dept is NIMS compliant...but we still use 10-code...the exception is during a critical incident where there needs to be inter-departmental communication...we switch to plain-talk...

    the NIMS courses arent difficult by any means...however all of our officers are required to pass 3 of them (IS100, IS200, and IS700 or the equivalent)

    yea i've been through quite a few NIMS classes already... to me it makes sense though. why use all these funky codes when just saying it works just as well if not better.... i realize that some things as far as law enforcement are nice to keep hidden but there is really no place for it in fire/rescue operations........

    and for those who were asking about it.... NIMS is a thing that has come down from the feds saying to help when unfamiliar departments are working a large incident together and basically the main part of it is to make everything standardized so that everyone understands.. part of that is using plain talk instead of code this and code that......

    true...ems and fire dont really need codes i dont think...but codes for the police are imperative for our safety many times

    The only time we use codes is when we don't want media involved or swarming the scene too soon.

    In BC where I work, there aren't very many codes. The codes usually refer to how you're responding, who will be there, and other things that the crew should know about.

    Examples:
    Code 1- accompanied by a friend or relative, guard radio transmissions
    Code 2- responding or transporting with no lights and no sirens
    Code 3- responding or transporting with lights and sirens
    Code 4- deceased
    Code 5- Police
    Code 6- Fire/Rescue
    Code 9- infectious disease, proceed with proper equipment
    Code 33- Crew in immediate danger (all other crews cease radio transmissions)
    Code X- Ambulance not used for transport of patient (patient refused transport)

    Ten codes:
    10-4= understood
    10-8= en-route (hospital or scene)
    10-7= arrived at (hospital scene or quarters/station)
    10-6= available for a call but is doing something (fueling up)
    10-20= location of your crew or the "20 of your backup, police or fire"
    10-9= radio transmission unreadable, please repeat

    There are other 10 codes.. but they're never used unless we're trying to screw with our dispatcher :p

    also codes are different depending where you are. i know in my dept the only codes we say are S32- suicide attempt, S7- dead person, 10-24, 10-94 - dealing with officer safety all the rest are plain talk. pd codes are different and they still use 10 codes but when they come on our channel they are told not to use any 10 codes. i work as a dispatcher for now, just finished paramedic and have the fire academy left.

    each system is different...10 codes are pretty much universal i think but there are many other codes that are system specific.example a dead body in fresno county is 1199 and in my county is 1055 10 code

    There has been talk about moving away from 10 codes in our service... not sure why.. it's a lot easier to use them, if you know em.

    its because too many civilians know or can learn the codes and listen i think we had issues with gang members shooting someone listening to see if they are dead or not and finding out which hospital the patient is going to and showing up to finish the job

    Yep. We only use 10-4, 10-8 and 10-7. Or 10-9 if your dispatcher doesn't know how to talk properly....
