Wife and I are planning on a cross country trip this summer. Wanting to sleep in Tacoma. Debating on building a sleeping platform.
Is there enough room to sit on the platform with a snugtop hi-liner camper shell? I have seen pictures of sleeping platforms with a regular height camper shell and and not willing to do that. Not enough space to be comfortable. Considering that the hi-liner is only about 5 or maybe 6 inches taller, I am starting to question how cramped that will be.
Can someone please post a picture of a platform with a hi-liner camper shell. Preferably with a person on the platform so that I can see how much space there is.
Maybe it is just more comfortable to sleep in the bed without a platform. Please chime in.

This guy made a vid of a cross country trip in his, not sure if it’s a SnugTop or an ARE but they are roughly the same in terms of space.

Here's my platform with a cab height shell minus a 4 inch foam pad and thick sleeping bag. I'm actually going to cut the platform in half for the same reason you've stated.

Dumb question, is it stable on your bed mat or does it shift with weight on there?

The center supports are quite tight fitting so there's no shifting. It's easy to take apart and doesn't weigh a lot. They're 3 separate platforms.

Not sure what all you plan on throwing in the back but we found some 1” thick workout mats that folded out to fit nicely in the bed. We spent a few trips sleeping on those before our old bones told us to knock it off. Never used a platform and just folded them up when we were done to keep them clean. Could easily also be used with a platform. Was more comfortable then our Z lite and thermarest.

I have Decked storage which would be close to a platform height.

I'm 6' 1" and you can see me inside it when I was installing the tracks.

Also here's a pic of some storage boxes for reference. on the left are Plano storage and right is the kind you can get from Costco.

So even with the higher camper shell and the sleeping platform, you cannot sit up straight. Doesn’t seem like such a great setup after all. Am I missing something?
Seems like so many are building these platforms......to me it seems to make more sense to be able to sit in the truck during a rain storm etc compared to having to always lie down. I realize that having the storage space would be great, but is it worth it? Decisions decisions..

That’s why we didn’t go with a platform.

I don’t have any pics. We sleep in the back of the truck a lot when camping. I put a shelf across the front about 20” deep. A lot less clastraphobic than with a platform. Old truck had a platform with drawers, we called it the coffin. Both setups did not have a raised roof. I like just the shelf setup much better.03B7B0B1-0BB6-4C94-8375-BCCC44BF416A.jpg

I don't have a hi-liner, just a regular leer for a 6' bed with a sleeping platform and drawers. It's a little tight but the gal and I have been very happy to not be sleeping on the ground in a tent anymore. Here's a few pics for reference. Also, this pad from Amazon is great and fits pretty well on the platform. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0713XHZJR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

We've toyed with the idea but he's not the brightest puss in the world so we decided against it. The truck bed is one of his favorite nap spots when we're home though so maybe it's not too crazy of an idea.

I know this is an old post now but thought I'd add my two cents since I'm about to build out the back of my F 150 with a sleeping set up and was trying to decide on which truck cap to get. I think it depends on how you are using the truck and camping. If you will mainly be hanging out by a fire all night and then just crawling in to sleep, it may be ok to not be able to sit up. But if you're like me and you plan to travel extensively/live out of the truck, I think max headroom is critical for livability. I want a space where I can hang out comfortably in the evening and read, etc. In my F 150, if I go with the Leer 122 (more head room than the snug top high liner) then I can build an 8" platform with 4" mattress on top and still have enough room to sit straight up with a few inches headroom above my head. The 8" platform gives me enough room for 5" deep drawers underneath. The leer 122 is the only truck cap I'm aware of that would allow this set up, and it probably still wouldn't work in a Tacoma since the bed depth is less than F 150.

I have an ARE MX, almost the same thing as a hi-liner, and I can sit up on my bed platform. It's a low platform, just over the wheel wells. My head just barely doesn't touch the roof.

I don't have any pics of me sitting in it, but you get the idea from the kiddos... There's enough headroom.

Lots more pics in my build thread.

Nice setup! Low enough to sit up straight it looks too.

I have a cab height ARE CX I can’t sit up but with only half a platform definitely gives more room
