Trouble getting out of 4WD

Shoot from the hip its icky actuators.
So want help diagnosing? Or just going to take to dealer?

(Note, first most helpful is techstream to see the exact reported position of each actuator, if you have a copy)..
Next most helpful in my opinion is to jack all 4 corners and switch back and forth and play with the system...
And finally if you dont have techstream and want to diagnose yourself, this is helpful.

How cold is it? The engagement is always much slower in the cold for me and requires more finagling to get it done.

 

Yeah correct, no 4lo. I know you need to be stopped and all that good stuff for 4lo. I'm probably going to take it in again.

 

Yeah normally I chock it up as user error but it sounds like you're doing everything right. Certainly won't hurt anything to take it in and have it checked.

Thanks, I feel like I got a lemon..I've been dealing with weird issues ever since I bought it in 2016...

 

Ick, I actually have to remind my dealership when I come in not to run it thru their wash. No swirl marks for me, no thanks

 

If its under warranty and you have doubts, then the dealer is the place to be. Having said that, mine does seem to engage and disengage much better with frequent use. And the manual says to use it every month to keep it loose. I hadn't used mine in a few months (shame on me) when I wanted it this weekend, and it was sluggish at first. But after engaging and disengaging frequently in the snow over the weekend, it's now working like a champ. Perhaps you've been using it all the time, and this time it was different. but if you haven't tried 4x4 in a while, it might loosen up just fine with some exercise.

 

Good looking out. I don't really use it until winter hits, or I'm off the beaten path while fishing. Although I thought it was strange that it felt like it was in 4wd, but the 4wd light just blinked over and over and never stayed static. I also never heard the relay either.

 

Are you driving on dry pavement with 4x4?
Is it enough snow to actually warrant 4x4?

LONG STORY SHORT, back in the day (at around 10 k miles) Toyota granted me two new tires because they discovered two that failed a road force balance. Toyota is now saying that due to the variation in the tire sizes, I have to call customer care and ask them to replace the tires, all 4, with some other brand and not the kelvar tires. So tomorrow I'll call, I am sure I have a good case seeing as though this truck has been in the shop for the tire issues quite a bit and none of it is my wrong-doing. They said that new tires should alleviate the problem. They swapped my tires with a brand new truck and the problem carried over to the new truck and fixes itself on mine.

 

I've never heard of tires fucking up your 4x4 unless they are two different sizes causing binding.

 

did you see the part where I said they are two slightly different sizes due to uneven wear?

 

Mine was acting stupid yesterday. Wouldn't get into 4LO. Usually doesn't give me much trouble but yesterday had to pull back n forth a few times to get it to slip in.

 

I doubt the tires had anything to do with it. Likely just coincidence.
I think sometimes the teeth/gears/splines just don't quite line up right and you need to drive a little for things to mesh/engage properly.

 

Slightly different wear shouldn't do it. It's not good but I'm talking a 1"taller tire or something .

Given they're factory tires unless they're bald I cant see it.


But why not just go buy new tires that aren't as shit as the factory tires?

 

If it's something like they put a 265 70 16 and a 265 75 16 on I can see issues . But a 265 70 16 all around with a little uneven wear shouldn't cause issues on the 4x4 to this level

 

Read the little instruction card on your sun visor. My truck is a manual. When completely stopped and in neutral, wheels straight and clutch depressed, I turn the dial and wait 2-3 seconds. If nothing happens, I will put the truck in gear and creep forward a little and will usually go in right away.

 

I understand the confusion here guys but basically Im rocking two sets of the stock tires (two pairs) with a difference of about 6'000 miles on each pair. That slight variance in tread really makes a difference overall on the circumference. So...now I have a case open with Toyota, either the dealer or toyota is going to get me a pair of BFGs! Toyota dealership actually mentioned in the write up that they recommend four new tires, other than factory brand. I know it's weird, but like I said, the problem carried over to a brand new truck, and with four new tires on my truck, the problem stopped.
