    Here are some more photos of mine. I got everything free from my dad's stash of home improvement leftovers. Otherwise I would have used lighter materials. I wanted it low-profile so I still have head room in my cab-height shell. Both pieces are super-easy to remove; nothing is permanently attached.

    I used weatherstrip tape on the bottom of the 2X8's that form the shell, so it doesn't squeak or rattle on rough roads. I also used weatherstrip tape on the front and back to interference-fit it in the bed so it doesn't slide. I debated making 4 foldable wings that conform around the wheel wells, but decided they would just make those spaces less useful. That hunch was confirmed when I set it in the back the first time, grabbed a couple jerry cans and they fit perfect in the pockets on the sides of the platform.

    The lid can fold all the way back without hitting anything.

    The drawer is about 4 feet by 6 feet, plenty of storage space. Here it's pulled out far enough I can reach all the way in while standing on the ground outside. The angle of the photo is odd; only about 20 inches of the drawer are hanging out past the tailgate.

    It's deep enough to fit the essentials: a hi-lift jack, compressor, spare parts, tools, propane bottles and my camp stove. I can't wait to sleep above my camping shit instead of curled around it.

    Please steal away. Had I needed to go out and buy materials, I would have used 3/8" plywood for the top, made the drawer sides out of 1X8 and put a divider down the center of the drawer to keep the top from bowing when I sleep on it.

    Cool builds here, when I had a tall shell, I had a super basic 2 piece platform in my shell without rubbermaid totes underneath with paracord tied to them to pull em out.

    It wont be fancy. Just some 15/32 plywood and 1x10's. Then reinforced with some scrap 2x4's. I want to be able to pull it out fast, but still hold my fat ass up if I sleep on it..lol

    Couple of sheets of plywood, some screws. Easy to disassemble and assemble, light weight. Took an hour to build. I've been using it for three years. No need to complicate things unless you're living out of your truck.

    Thanks! Lived out of it for a year and a half across North America with my wife + 2 dogs. Taking it off this weekend to store in the garage, and install when we need it a few times per year now.

    Wish I didn’t sell my shell, super practical for city living and everyday commuting. While this, is not haha.
