I thought it was the south pole but who cares its still the only one to accomplish that.
Its sad to say they won't give the US customers the options they give the rest of the world when it comes to the trucks like an available DIESEL engine.

Yeah jason from Tundra Headquarters told me that, one of the reasons is emissions standards in the USA is more strict.

Toyota would have to modify the D4D engine in the hilux a bit to import it legally (to fit our emissions standards). Hell, i wish toyota would do that already...obviously alot of toyota truck owners would probably love a diesel option.

Interesting comment...I always thought Europe had the tougher emissions. In any event if the U.S. has tougher emissions then I would think they could sell the Hilux diesel engine in both the U.S. and Europe. It this case it would be a win win situation for them...(TOYOTA)

lol well i dunno, if you think about it, europe has a big market for diesel cars. from what ive seen on top gear in the UK, In general it looks like diesel cars outnumber gasoline cars.

One of my friends once said jokingly "the main reason the diesel engined hilux never was brought into the US is because americans are affraid of tiny diesel engines." :p

So if this was McDonald's and i could have it my way. I would take a solid axle, i want the old school Toyota axle in the front, twin turbo diesel, i hate the spool up on motors that are to little with a big turbo on it to make big paper numbers. I want it with a fully boxed frame, i would like to retain the plastic bed no rust. i like the current size but they can keep there plastic bumpers, put some steel on it. ill take mine with stiff leaf springs on it, i intend to carry things in my TRUCK. ill take mine with a installed break controller. lockers front and rear, and i know im in the minority of buyers but i would be willing to pay a reasonable price up to about 10000 more to get it just like i want. and i wouldn't buy it from my current dealer.

Your comment about tiny diesel engines is prolly right on! I think of the people I"ve talked to about a 4 cyl engine and all the comments come back very negative except for those of us who understand torque, power and mileage...LOL. In 84 when I first went to Germany they had to cut off my catalytic converter so I could burn leaded gas. While there for the next 10 years they (Europeans) finally got around to unleaded gas...so maybe the emissions aren't as tough. But they still have a bunch of Nazi like EPA people running loose. I'm sure if toyota thought they could make some money they would have built some diesels for our trucks by now. Still though it makes you wonder if the CEO is on a deal like GM and the rest of them were then maybe keeping cost down in the near future means bigger bonuses for them. Long term thinking might say otherwise and I wonder what there market share would grow too...need a smart toyota exec to answer these questions.....

LOL! Yesss! I think the thing with Europe is though, it seems like there isnt a country wide standard (i maybe wrong on this). But i find it odd that in 84 Germany was still using leaded fuel! haha.

But serriously, a Toyota executive needs to get on these forums sometimes, and check out what bright ideas they can incorporate into their cars from what people already drive!

I think THAT all started in the 70's with that horrible GM diesel...the one where they took the 350 ci gasoline V8 and basically put diesel heads on it. That turned off the average car buyer to 'small' diesels in cars.

But the EPA restrictions also killed small diesels by the way they restricted sulfur in diesel fuel. EPA took a big diesel engine friendly approach and the EU took a small diesel engine friendly approach.

I suspect the EPA is not friendly to ANY hydrocarbon powered vehicle or in fact to any means of burning hydrocarbons to generate power. It is time for Americans to wake up and start doing something to change the course we are on before it is gone forever.

Maybe Toyota should concentrate on getting their quality back to what it was in the 80's and 90's........

I was at the ford dealer getting ready to trade in my taco for a 2011 superduty with a turbodiesel (390 hp and 735 ft/lbs torque and a solid front axle) and the guy there told me they have gotten three tundras in in the last month as trades; said they all had to have an emissions pump replaced at near 4 grand because toyota was NOT honoring their waranty and the owners were pissed. He showed me one sitting on their lot at that time. Toyota is in fact crapping in their own lunch box if they keep building trucks like this on top of rapidly disappearing resale values with all the bad publicity.

Toyota quality has gone from legendary to average in the last 10 -15 years.
I can't understand why Toyota is not bending over backwards to dig themselves out of the hole they have made for themselves.

They still make a good truck which is why I own one, however if they keep up the poor customer service their market share will continue to suffer.

Also need to remember that Toyota has increased in the number of vehicles they have produced from the 80's and 90's so the chances of them having a bad car or truck goes up. While the percentage of lemon vehicles stay the same. I.E. 1-2% of 400,000 = 4-8K were 1-2% of 1.5 million = 15,000-30,000 bad vehicles (just random numbers I made up). But the percentage of out of spec vehicles stays the same. I'd mutch rather deal with Toyota than Ford, Chevy or GM.

I know I am coming in 9 pages after the beginning... but I would purchase a diesel Tacoma in a heartbeat. Just make sure it isn't a 4-cyl. A 6-cyl turbo with ~250hp and ~350-400tq would be fantastic.
