    Not really sure,
Have you looked at the frame yourself? do you know if it has some qualifying holes? ( I think its a 10mm hole, AKA size of a dime ) I had my frame inspected, but since its been undercoated lots, there was no issues found ( which I knew since I'm under there often enough for one thing or another )

Honestly I don't personally know of anyone who's had the recall done here in NS.

and welcome to the site BTW!

    Welcome!
Don't think it was anyone here
don't know much about the 1st gen's but check for frame rust. Get up under it and don't be afraid to poke around. Last thing you want is any vehicle to be all rusted out underneath!
let us know how you make out

Thanks! I’m replacing the brakes this weekend so I’m going to take a closer look. Just reading up on them had me worrying about frame rust. If I don’t see any I’m just going to have it undercoated as part of the program and keep an eye on it. Way I was reading it online almost makes it seem they all rust out.

Yeah, I had a quick look underneath and it seemed a little squishy in front of the leaf mount, was going to have my mechanic look it over but there's too many red flags so moving on.

Next question! I was also looking at a second gen up in New Brunswick. 6MT DCSB TRD OR - basically all my hopes and dreams, except it turns out it was a total loss only a month old in 07 and imported to Alberta then Quebec as salvage. Would you consider buying a salvage vehicle? I'm pretty sure that excludes any kind of dealer support on the frame but if it's in good shape otherwise is that a deal breaker?

I've seen them rot under the fender flares.

I'd rather buy a smashed truck and fix it than buy one that's already been fixed.

It really depends on what wrote it off though, was it a minor bump? Or was it tossed down a hill into a lake?

I'm always skeptical about other people and their workmanship, I've done some pretty sketchy things with cars I've had, but I knew what was done and I wasn't chasing someone else's work.

Take the Supra for example... Oh my god the deeper I dig into it the farther my jaw drops.

Gotta wonder what it took to consider a month old truck a total loss.

    that too!
it would have to be pretty serious, I don't think a simple airbag deploy would after only a month would cause it to be written off.
anyway to get the VIN and run a carfax or something? ( does carfax even tell the extent of the damage?)

No, carfax is how I found out about the write off, it just says "accident reported" then two weeks after that "new owner reported" and then a month after that "registration event - salvage" and " damage event -total loss vehicle" That was all in Georgia. A month later it was imported to Alberta as salvage, another month later into Quebec, then finally registered in NB where is it's been ever since.

Ya that is a big ole bag of nope. If it was like, 2 grand for the truck I would say hell ya. But I assume they want 10k for it.

It took me a year and a half to find and buy the one that I wanted. So if you don't need the truck right now I would be patient and wait for the correct truck to come up. No sense stretching yourself thin spending too much on the truck and then not being able to afford tires and maintenance stuff that will be coming up. If it makes you feel better I just rolled over 300k on my V6 stickshift and there are no signs that I will have to do anything major to the thing for another 100k. Few minor chassis stuff that I expect with a vehicle this old, but that is all piddly and easy.

Yeah, I'm torn. Just talked to a buddy who used to tow salvage and he said that new when it was written off, it could have just been a fender bender and buddy had really good insurance. Or as Mitch said it could have rolled down a hill into a lake.
I think if the frames straight and showing no sign of rust I might go for it.

    Edit: also, define "need" lol.

Sounds like you’ve already moved on from the 04 DCSB, but definitely watch out ahead of the front spring hangers right at the start of the box. Under the rear fender flares (like all salt exposed trucks), the bed rails for the box mounts themselves can get pretty soft. Also, where the clutch would be on the driver side floor pan also gets bad on most first gens I’ve seen… Including mine.

Also, I love my DCSB, but I would not get another first gen that didn’t have the frame recall done.

You lack a reliable means of transport to and from work. Anything else is pure want. I know the feel, but I have also bought too many basket cases. Price to me is 100% the determining factor. If it is dirty cheap it is worth it. If it is not dirty cheap it is a money pit and headache.

Nailed it! My last vehicle was nothing more than a reliable means of transport (until it wasn't). I somehow paid cash for that one though and this time I have to finance so things are a little different. I figure if I finance something I don't really want I'm never going to get the truck I do want. Right now, I need a vehicle so I may as well get the one I want. It just sucks I don't have time to look around.

I hear ya on the tire and maintenance allowance though. Will definitely be making a list of possible expenses and adding to the purchase price to see if it still makes sense.
