That's explains a lot. Mine was doing that on the 87 tune. I switched to 91 running 93 and it's gone

Mat mentioned via support ticket that this is being tested on a few trucks. Hoping to get a fix at some point. My truck might also need the idle surge fix too, but going to wait a full tank of gas on 1.05 87 before making that determination.

I'm going to flash back to 93 tune soon since I believe I might have gotten bad gas from the previous shell station. The shell station next to my house has an awkward entrance location for the past year due to very heavy interstate construction and it was pumping very slow. So 93 oct was probably sucking bad fuel or just sucking the bottom.

Got everything tuned to the 1.05 91 tune.
Coming from 45k miles on factory 04B01, and maybe a day on 04B04.
    • First impressions... Why didn't the truck drive like this from the factory? Embarrassing for Toyota.
    • I love how fast it shifts in town under light throttle, I love how readily it shifts into (and holds) 5th and 6th on the highway, and I love how accurate choosing gears is with throttle pressure. I like that the ECT button actually has a purpose now as opposed to the "kinda hold shifts longer maybe button." It actually feels like two different shift maps now. I can't wait to tow the camper with it and see how it behaves.
    • Haven't driven it enough to make any fuel economy conclusions, plus we are on winter gas and I let it warm up different amounts of time every day. So time will tell on that. I have a heavy ass truck, with a RTT, on 35" mud tires; so not expecting much.
    • As far as power increases? I dunno maybe? Again, heavy ass brick. I will say the power feels more linear from idle to redline and less exponential. Truck seems to get rolling off the line a lot more effortlessly. So let's say probably has more area under the curve? My butt is a bad dyno
    • As an aside, I have an aFe intake and exhaust and it's really nice to be able to quietly cruise around town with light throttle or let it growl under WOT. With the factory tune it was always so angry even under light acceleration because the truck just didn't know how to shift.
    Wishes?
    • Speedo calibration.
      • The Hypertech takes care of the instrument cluster, but with Torque, you can see that the ECU still has the wrong data available which is ~10% low. Which one is the truck using for shift points, fuel economy calcs, etc? I dunnno
    • Mat has talked about some cookie cutter base tunes for gearing, tires, weight, etc... I don't know that it's really necessary for me personally, but if it makes it drive even better I'll throw a ticket in when the time comes.
    Well done OVTune

Everything for this tune has already been said but I'm going to reiterate how great it is. I had the TSB done at my 5k service and flashed with 11.7k on the clock. My truck is bone stuck currently.

I flashed 91 1.05 yesterday at lunch in less than a minute and immediately noticed a difference at start up. My truck had always idled between 800-1000. It sat steady at about 600 with no surges. The low idle also eliminated the surge when placing the truck in gear.

The drive home was also great. My butt dyno noticed the increased low end power and actually having a throttle that accepted input was a blessing. On the highway it held sixth and occasionally dropped to fifth all through over passes and hills where I was usually screaming in fourth. The truck felt much less pent up and being able to hold a steady speed thanks to actually having throttle input was easy. I was even able to accelerate from 65-75 to pass with out dropping to fourth then back to fifth and then back to fourth and finally back to fifth.

I did notice the speeding past fourth into fifth when getting on the highway this morning but nothing a little S4 action didn't fix. S4 was also useful in accelerating up to speed as I was able to give considerable throttle input without the truck dropping to third. Also no stupid surge at 3500, smooth, linear acceleration through redline.

I was told by the wife that I had to get an automatic and had regret it from day one as I hadn't had an automatic in six years. 1.05 has certainly lessoned that blow and made me love the truck all over again. Sorry, not sorry, if positive posts are no longer allowed here. If you're still on the fence, I would say 1.05 is 100% worth the investment in your truck.

Thanks Mat! Can't wait for shift lock.

Also what @monkeyevil said while I was typing this up.

    I was
under the impression that the guys with no dongle had to E-Mail for files and the guys with dongles did a direct download off his website...
I understand he took them down so they are not available at the moment and that's why I was wondering when they might be available again.

I've been looking into the OVTune as well. I'm also spending my life on the horrible lease roads in West Texas. Let me know how much the tune helps.

I recently decided to not drive over 75 mph out here and my gas mileage improved by 4 mpg. Once I get the tune in and running I am hoping I get a little more grunt from 2-3000 rpm and better mpg so I can go 80-85 mph without getting 13 mpg.

That idle surge should mellow out after 2 tanks. I’m noticing it change over time on mine, but not gone yet

Mat, have you noticed any significant differences between 04B30 and 04B31? Is 04B31 tied to a specific trim package (ie. TRD PRO)?

I noticed this feeling, not gonna call it an issue. Noticed it with 87, then switched to 91. It is even more pronounced in 91, the best way that I can think to describe it is WOOHOO! Finally drives like I would have expected it to when I got it. I never expected a piece of software was going to turn a V6 into a V8 with tons of power, but it is finally fun to drive. One of the biggest ways I can notice this is I don't have to think about it. Plain and simple, just drive the thing. Don't have to worry about a hill coming up and how much speed I have built up and how much I press down as I get into the hill. I find myself driving along (a little fast) and don't notice hills or worry about passing of if someone pulls out in front of me when I have that head of steam built up so the stupid thing will crest the hill without downshifting 10 times. I can finally say I like my truck and not just for the creature comforts. Thanks @OVTune!
