I had a RTT on the stock bars of a 4runner 4th gen and honestly it would have been such a pain in the ass to get it off, that I was never worried about it, although it does and can happen. I know some companies make special nuts for them https://cascadiatents.com/shop/security-nuts/ this is one option, but there are others.

Mine is bolted down with a dozen nuts and bolts but someone could undo them fairly quickly if they wanted to. I suppose you could get the security hardware that Tacos03 mentioned or chain and padlock it to the truck.

I’m really looking at purchasing one but need to be sure it’s going to be comfortable for my wife as I could sleep in the dirt and be ok. But I’m trying to find the most comfortable tent with a great mattress that won’t require any modifications after purchase.

Anyone able to close up their CVT tent with an added foam topper? Recently picked up a 2 in memory foam topper which has added an immense amount of comfort (wife’s request), however, I wasn’t able to get it closed up correctly. Is there a trick to this? Or am I shit out of luck?

It's more comfortable than my old CVT, so I'd say give it a whirl if you were to ask me
Yes it's possible. Gotta make sure everything is going to fold up nicely inside first, then flip it closed, sit on it for a bit to force some air out and compress it, tighten the side straps, throw over the cover, and then tuck and zip

    I have mods
The security nuts will help but if someone really wants the tent and happens to have bolt cutters handy, they aren't going to care not many security nuts or bolts you have holding the ting in place. The only real security product, short of a padlock or cable, that I know of are the security mounts from here - https://www.wheeleveryweekend.com/collections/rooftop-tent-products/products/rtt-security-clamps

These will prevent someone using bolt cutters since they are tight enough to the mounting rails that the cutter head won;t fit and they come with the security nuts too so they can't be easily removed. And no more bent mounting plates, ever.

I use tamper resistant nuts to mount my RTT to my rack: https://www.mcmaster.com/tamper-resistant-nuts

And then I used Tamper resistant Torx to mount my rack to my bed: https://www.mcmaster.com/standard-rounded-head-screws

All you can do is try and prevent the majority, certain people have differences of level of prevention, cause if they really want it they are going to get it.

^ this. I would be more concerned with someone stealing a light bar or rotopax can or spare tire or something like that. It is not quick or easy to steal a rtt. Especially in a grocery store or mall parking lot.

I used to close up my cvt mt bachelor with an egg crate foam topper, 2 person Teton sleeping bag, 2 full size pillows, a sheet, and a fleece blanket. Fold everything onto the side of the mattress that doesn’t move, then fold the mattress over that, (then moisture barrier over the mattress if you use one) then fold the tent up.

...Our campfire that night was one of our best of the trip. With two bundles of wood, we kept it burning hot - the heat helping to cut the chill of what was clearly going to be a clear, cold night. As we had the night before, talk was of our favorite parts of the trip and places to which we wanted to return - either to re-explore or see in more depth - the list long enough for several more trips!

Broke in the tent on day 1 with a rainy weekend out on the trail. Quite an experience.

Great experience -- we hit some clay hill climbs and that made Saturday a little stressful. As for the tent, it was awesome--I would highly recommend the rain cover offered by Tepui because the tent material does keep you dry but takes a long time to dry out.

Interesting. If you can pull that off, I should definitely be able to get it closed up with the topper. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for answering the security question. One more question for all the freespirit tri-layer tent owners. I’m looking to purchase the removable tri-layer wall for my high country series 55. If you can, will you please post the connection points for the tri-layer walls? I want to make sure mine is compatible. I’ll post a pic of the loops tomorrow. Thanks again for the help

That tent was from 5 or 6 years ago, so things may have changed.
