Just got this tonight, it was free on the ranch down here in TX.

We have everything here, the hogs and boars are always free. And Coyotes, but of course we leave them for dead.

We have it in the fridge for a couple days. There’s been a pack of 12 or so, going out tomorrow to get more if we can.

I love hog hunting, got super into it a couple years ago. Bought nightvision and were going weekly, so dang fun... they have disappeared recently, I’m sure they’ll be back.

What do you recommend for hunting with? I was going to bring my shotgun. My dad is bringing his AR. Only other option I would go with is my AK. Wishing I had an AR10 right now though.

Definitely not a shot gun, that’ll only scare them off. AR10 would work or anything .300 or bigger, even .270.

But, not an AR15 for bigger game, many times it’ll just injure the animal and they run off.

30-30 prob work close range, but Id say 270 or greater would be a good caliber. I wouldnt mess with a shotgun unless you were in the brush and had slugs and only had close range shots.

I watched one show where they shot a hog with a 30-06 and it dropped...kicked around for a few seconds then got up and ran off by the time they got to where they shot it and never found it...a while later (weeks or months) they shot another hog and it was the one they shot with the 30-06, with a healed scar. They head/neck shot it the last time and killed it, but still a tough animal.

Use the 30.06, the shotgun slugs won’t do a whole lot unless you’re two feet away and you won’t get that close.

I have never hunted hogs nor do I know much about it, so maybe I am way off target, however I do own a couple of rifled slug guns one being a Mossberg 695 in 12 ga & a H&R Ultra Slug in 20 ga, both will shoot the 3" mag. The Mossberg shoots a 7/8 oz rifled slug at around 1700fps (?) I have dropped deer (with both guns) on the spot at ranges approaching 100 yds & wouldn't hesitate to stretch that by a few. I would think the rifled slug would be almost perfect for Hogs.

Those will work, the good thing is they’re in a group, take your pick and fire away.

Just got back from a free range hog hunt on the Rio Grand near Eagle Pass. I shot 2 pigs and a Javelina with my bow. Been going down there for 8 years every Feb. great eating!
