Go ahead and listen to some of these boneheads and spend money on an after market intake and pull warm air into your intake.dyno tests have proven your gonna waste your money and get no added hp.does sound better without the resonator but that's all I would set out to change.

My plan was never to do a full CAI setup. I was looking at the HPS silicone intake tube as a way to delete that resonator. Seems expensive to get rid of it but it may be worth it eventually.

It is an expensive piece of silicone but in my experience over the last few months using it...it’s better than the stock setup...so I won’t be going back regardless of opinions.

I'm sure if I asked a dealership nicely they'd get me a "good deal" on a TRD Intake box...

Be interesting to see if anyone has one and whether they've actually noticed anything better about their truck's performance, since the TRD Box is from Toyota and is supposedly engineered better than all of the aftermarket ones out there.

My has always made that sound with the stock air intake. When you turn the wheel at all, you hear the RPM's jump ever so slightly if you're listening closely. I wouldn't say it's a knocking noise though. Pretty sure it's normal.

Interesting idea, in theory it should lower the air temp inside, but I'm curious what the average air velocity is inside the tube and the amount of time it takes for the airflow to travel from the filter box to the intake?
Would like to know if you feel any noticeable difference in throttle response.

So I was able to pick off a TRD intake on cyber Monday 2018 for $300 shipped. After installation I felt (1) not much of a difference overall from stock and (2) not much of a sound difference either.

    /on_soapbox

Now I understand that intakes and people’s opinions on whether they improve or do not improve “performance” are like assholes – everyone’s got one. I personally do not buy intakes for HP gains. I like the sound produced by them (generally) and why I’ve bought them over the years on several different vehicles. That is how I choose to spend my money. And I am blessed that even if after spending 3 bills on an intake it’s not going to have any affect on whether there is food on my family’s table or not.

    /off_soapbox

I started thinking what could be done to enhance the sound a bit. So the objective became removing the resonator box on the intake tube. I purchased an additional TRD intake tube (PTR03-35160AB), $58, as well as an 8” silicon intake tube from eBay, $8. And got to work. See pix below.

Today I was able to finally install my TRD intake tube with resonator delete. Here are my initial impressions:

    - shocked that there was now actually some noticeable improved throttle response
    - I’m able to hear some growl now when stompin’ on the accelerator

My personal take away? If I had to do it all over I’d have gone with the HPS silicon intake tube (57-1600) and possibly the TRD intake flow accelerator (PTR03-35160AE) along with an aftermarket drop in filter. I would have started with the HPS tube and then added later the other parts if I thought they would help.
