If hubcentric wheels are centered by the hub and the lug nuts only provide the clamping force how can some hubcentric wheels (and spidertrax spacers) use conical lugs instead of the flat lugs to attach the wheel? Wouldn't torquing the conical lugs center the wheel on the lugs vice the hub?

Hub centric will alsways nave hubcentric if your spacer is. The lugs are conical so that they recess in the wholes for proper torquing. They cannot un center the hub.

Why do some hubcentric wheels use conical and some flat lug nuts if the hub always centers the wheel

That depends on wheel material and where the round hole is machined vs. the wheel geometry. Flat lugs “mag” style were are generally used where alloy wheel has machined hole in a flat area. Use the correct lugs for your wheel design.

It is purely a matter of which is designed to seat properly and thus torque properly for a given wheel design.
