ambrosia or spalted maple I think...Im piecing my tools together slowly. End grain cutting boards take a lot of gluing and time to dry...Im working on one thats got a lot of pieces. It doesnt help I only have 2 bessey clamps so that cuts my glue time as I can only do one piece at a time...;)

Not really, it’s no different than the drip rail around the edges. You keep the wood clean and sealed properly and you’re good to go.

At some point she may go with the commercial sized, but this one isn’t a huge difference in size. Yours is probably a 4.5 quart right now or possibly a 5 quart. The one she wants is a 6 quart with the bowl lift instead on the tilt head. It’s enough to allow her to get more cupcakes and stuff out of a single batch.

I think that model has the nylon sacrificial gear so if u use the mixer for heavy applications like dough or the pasta roller you’ll need to replace it every now and then. Good news is the gear’s only a couple of bucks and a fairly simple install :)
If u do any gardening/canning get u one of these: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Kitchen...le-Strainer-for-Stand-Mixers-FVSFGA/100487714

That turned out fantastic! Pretty sure it is spalted maple that was my first thought. Which can be a PITA running through the planner without chipping, great job. Would love to have a 48" planer but would take 3 phase 220 to run, I end up taking large glueups in and pay to have them done based on the board foot. A man can never too many clamps. I have used rope and tourniquet method before. I'll take clamps any day though LOL.

Yours is an Artisan series, right? Like this one?

If so can you confirm this is compatible: https://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-K...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=MFBTC0S8HRKADS1ZA9W0

I'd like to be able to put it to use when it arrives, without throwing stuff all over the kitchen. I could confirm if I could read a model number on the label in the pics (pics are of the specific unit I won), but I can't.

Spalted maple - that's it! I got the word "Spaulding" caught in my head and couldn't shake it, even though I knew it wasn't right - probably a function of the 86 times I've watched 'Caddyshack'.

When I got it in to edge grain form, I was using a power hand planer and didn't get it exactly level. You can see evidence of this in the walnut pattern where there is a little overlap towards one end and it matching up corner to corner towards the other end. It doesn't jump out as a flaw, but I know it's there (and now everyone else does, too ;)). There is only one spot on the maple that is chipped. Well, not really chipped, just that there was a fairly wide cavity that ran the thickness of the board and was cut in a perfect cross section. It doesn't look like a flaw, though. It looks kind of neat and shows off the intricacy of the wood.

The planer we are using can support a little extra width, but the sky is almost the limit with regards to length. I'd like a nice, long board that fits on a folding table without hanging over the front or back edges, but is long enough to put multiple meats on to serve right off of it. We'll get something done, hopefully.

Oh, it certainly could! Though this one has a lot going on with the pattern, so it might now show etching quite as well.

We are going to use cutting boards as part of fundraising coming up. A friend of ours is running the Chicago Marathon and is raising money for Operation Smile (provide free surgery to correct cleft palates). I think between my buddy's woodworking skills and my involvement in the BBQ community, we could offer folks some awesome boards while raising a good bit of money. I'll be in touch with you. If I can work it out to get the to/from shipping cheap enough (we're talking something like 10 cutting boards), I'd like to have you put our logo on them. His fundraising runs through October, so don't sweat it if this doesn't come back up for a few months ;).

@itzyoboipaul - I wasn't really planning to but as fate would have it I had to meet someone about a block away from Home Depot last night so I gave it a few minutes hunting for the supposedly throw out weber charcoal. I had no such luck - they lock their dumpsters. I'm sitting on close to 20 bags of briquettes at home right now though so I'm not too worried.

In the future you'll know to bring a lock pick! The thought of you sitting in your truck and waiting for the coast to be clear to score some charcoal is pretty damn funny. If only your efforts had been rewarded.

I have several cutting boards but not as nice as I'd like. And like woodworking have had several designs in my mind for awhile. And of course checking Fine Woodworking from time to time for images. But I would certainly consider one of those cutting boards your talking about if they turn out nice!

I think hand planing is more of a black art than science LOL. Still doesn't stop me from trying once in awhile.

My avatar is a crop of this picture of my reloading bench years ago.

Those 2 rosewood handled hand planes on the shelf are just 2 of many.

the bessey clamps are by far the best clamps Ive owned. I have some other bar type clamps that work but not as good as the bessey parallel clamps. I have about 6 of the bar clamps, and 2 corner clamps, and 2 bessey clamps. I need to get at least 2 maybe 4 more bessey clamps.
