Here’s the deal. Mike is a very good friend of mine. Setting up that gofundme was a huge emotional brick because he’s never been in a position where he couldn’t pay his bills or take care of his family. He’s had to sell his horse (a rescued nag) and cut back on all non-essentials to make sure the mortgage on his 5-acre homestead is paid. He only set the thing up so we, his friends, could securely get money to him. The interview covered all of this and more. Instead, they make the thing about how HE could be violating ethics rules.

How is forcing a man to work but not paying him unethical? Last time I checked that was slavery, and we outlawed that over 150 years ago.

I’m so pissed. It could be my agency in that position come September. We’re squirreling away everything we can so we can operate 4 to 5 months without pay.

    This is all bullshit.

The mortgage companies, utility companies, cell phone providers, internet providers, grocery stores, etc... don't care that you will eventually get paid. They want their money now not excuses. If you talk with them they may extend your payment. Sometimes with a penalty, sometimes with out. Not everyone is able to save enough money to carry them through extended non-pay statuses. If your lucky, you have enough available credit on credit cards to carry you through and you have the funds to make the minimal payment(s) until you go back on pay status.

This is one giant debacle for the legal teams for sure. I’m affected by this shutdown and 3 days ago, for the first time in the history of the United States, a military service did not receive pay and...there is potential for us to miss the Feb 1st paycheck as well.

We did receive some guidance on crowdsourcing and as long as we don’t use our organization, and pictures or indications of us in uniform doing organization specific activities as a basis for the gift or donations. Basically we can say we are impacted by the shutdown in a personal capacity and not official capacity.

I don’t think a lot of people were prepared for this and it’s been interesting learning what we can do and can’t do during a shutdown.

I think the media may have it slightly twisted to make it out the ethics violations as worse than they are.

Also, post not directed specifically to @dtaco06 . More of a generalization and relevant topic

If you have people going online and saying “I work for the IRS and haven’t been paid due to the shutdown and am working to process your tax refunds, all without pay. Please donate to help me pay my bills and keep my head in the game”

That’s an ethics violation because you’re using your official title as a means to solicit gifts and donations.

What if you say “I don't work for the IRS ;) and haven’t been paid due to the shutdown and am working to process your tax refunds, all without pay. Please donate to help me pay my bills and keep my head in the game”

Yeah, when opportunity presents itself the dredges of society will rise up to take advantage of it.

I’m amazed at how much support we’ve received from the community and the food banks and food pantries have really helped out.

This article came out recently from one of the former Commandants of the CG and the very last sentence in it really strikes it home.

You are right. I googled it and it is Horny Mike's. My wife reminded me that Barret Jackson is in town this week.
