Simple question...I hope. I have a 2017 SR crew cab V6 automatic 4x4. It has the standard traction control and the ALS. My question is this: is it worth putting in a locker? Do the traction control functions do well enough for mild-ish off road situations, and would they interfere with each other if I install a locker? It's not a cheap mod, so I want to make sure it's worth it if I do it. Again, being a SR without all the factory off road upgrades, I wonder if this would be a worthwhile invetment.

ALS? Hmm, will you be doing any serious off roading to where you think you will need a locker? I didn't plan on doing serious off roading but since I have my locker on my OR I am a little more confident on where I'll take the truck. I would say it's better to have and not need then to need and not have. However some people really don't go anywhere where they truly need a locker. Since you're having budget influence your decision I say it matters more on whether you think you will end up needing it and will that need outweigh your budget influence. The traction control is pretty good though, the truck will not let me spin the tires unless it's really slippery or I mash it too hard.

It's more a question of why spend the money if it's not going to pay off. I know some Jeeps have issues of conflicting systems even with all facotry stuff; if you don't push the right combination of buttons, it works against itself. I was wondering if the same thing happens here. From what I've read, there doesn't seem to be conflict between facory features, but all I've read so far is about Sport and Off-Road type models. Mine doesns't have some of the higher-end features. That being said, I've run into spots where patience and years of doing stupid thing has helped me out of a jam, but a locker would have made things, umm, less interesting shall we say, lol. I'm a 60 year old old-school mechanical everything type of guy, so this electronic stuff bewilders me. It was so much easier back in the day to know what mods would work and what not!

You have a very capable truck as is...most guys with OR trim don’t even use the locker.

Atom Ant, you're absolutely right! Other than a leveling kit from Lowrangeoffroad, 33" Toyos and a hidden winch, the only other mod I'm even considering is this one...provided it's going to be enough of a benefit.

Ronzio, so I have found. That's why I really want to make sure a locker is going to make that much of a difference before I bother with it. So far I have been pleasantly surprized. I pull a 20' camper trailer into places I shouldn't, and the stock system has saved my butt more often than I care to admit. (Butt it was fun, lol)

Ok well, the factory locker on my OR won’t engage unless I’m in 4lo. However you will go aftermarket and I am sure it will not have that restriction. Hell there’s even a mod for turning the locker on in 2hi/4hi as opposed to 4lo only.
I do not think it will interfere with or be interfered by the stock factory features. However I have not done it and I am saying this based on my OR and what I’ve read on these forums. My experience and situation is vastly different from yours. Take it with a grain of salt.

You should only get one after you get stuck and think you could benefit from it In the future... atleasts that’s my plan.

The 6 Jeeps that crossed the Darien Gap in 1978 were open/open. Unless you plan a more extreme adventure than the Darien, you should be able to get plenty of places without one. Lockers are put into trucks these days because they are a relatively inexpensive add on. They are not a requirement for a truck to be “off road worthy”.

If you already have a winch, or truly consider putting a winch on your truck, I would not get a locker (unless you plan to ‘wheel where there are no trees to winch from). With the winch, it might take you a little longer to get unstuck, but having just a rear locker doesn’t guarantee you getting unstuck. Just my opinion though

Correct but that’s the difference between a right and a option.

Gwynn 1975, you're right about the winch; indispensable add on. That was my either/or choice over a locker when I bought my taco. This is the first modern 4x4 I've owned so, like a typical old fart, I am skeptical about all this newfangled tech. But it keeps surprising me, so I think (since I do indeed have a winch, lol) that I'll spend my money on other of life's necessities... like more guns and ammo!

Keep it mechanical an way more affordable, I love my detroit trutrac limited slip. Its no locker for sure but works great paired with good tires an winch I have not needed a locker thus far. Does not interfere with factory electronics in the slightest if anything the asld helps both tires spin with it.
