You can also buy a Police/Fire Scanner from Radio Shack, kinda cool listening to stuff going on in your area.
Just make sure your local department didn't switch to digital scanners. I think most are still on AM/FM.

If it was AM/FM, you'd pick them up on your car radio!
Most older sets are in the 800 MHz range; newer are 900 MHz range. Digital... I don't know about. And most of the really juicy stuff goes to encrypted channels.
Still, if you know the 10-codes, or whatever radio lingo is used in your area, it's a kick.

Yeah I know, but sometimes I don't have computer access.

Well, I guess I don't know. I thought I saw something about AM/FM on my radio, I guess that's about picking up weather alerts.

I keep 10-11 codes next to my desk and have the most important one's memorized.

Really cute guys haha. As a police officer I can tell you half of the jobs arent put out on the air where you can pick them up though. We send them via a mobile terminal in our cars so you (or the news media) don't hear it and get there first. The juicy stuff is "transmit silent" material.

    Pretty much stock
Yea, the terminals in the cars are taking over. The only time my calls are dispatched over the radio is when i don't acknowledge on the terminal. Other than traffic stops (for obvious safety reasons) the radio is pretty silent.
