When I shift my truck from park to reverse on a cold start it clunks. Sometimes it jerks the truck a bit. It only does this from park to reverse, not park to drive. If I start it in neutral then go to park it doesn't clunk. It goes away after I drive it a bit then there is no clunk from park to reverse. Shifts fine in all gears. I've changed the tranny fluid and rear diff fluid and have taken it to the dealership and an independent shop and both have said they couldn't find anything wrong. It's been like this for the past 10k miles or so.

Any transmission guys out there who could help me out?

I have the same issue with my 2001 except mine does it from R to D or P to D on cold starts. I'm wondering if it's a U joint/carrier bearing or mount issue

Could be because of higher engine RPMs when cold at Idle. Or perhaps you have weight on the parking pawl and suddenly releasing the tension when shifting to R.

So what issue would the higher RPMs be exposing? Surely it's not normal.

    Pretty common.

Back-up into the parking stall so you don't have to go into reverse when you drive out. No more cold-start clunks. Heh

Pretty normal sounding. This winter I have been getting 1 second delay from shifting from park to drive from a cold start in minus 30 (Celsius) weather. The parts are cold, what do you want them to do?

I had this fixed about a year ago. I cannot remember what the TSB was. Problem was solved after work was done.

Mine does this as well. I've always just assumed it's my truck telling me it's ready to roll.

Reverse is engaging and is shock loading slightly. Kind of like pressing the gas and shifting to D.
