New owner here with a TRD OR Auto and have read many good things about the OV Tune for this truck in its ability to correct drive ability issues and make things more enjoyable. What do you think? I concerned about voiding my warranty for future issues and repairs if I get the tune though.

Is the factory warranty toast once the truck has the tune, if so, any way to keep the warranty and still enjoy the tune?

    Thanks

The dealer can not detect the tune. If you’re that paranoid about it you have the ability to go back and forth from the stock tune and OVTune whenever you want

Personally I wouldn’t worry. As others said, the dealer doesn’t have the tools to detect. But their is a miscommunication by some that Toyota can’t either, that’s absolutely incorrect. Toyota can, and could also easily provide the tools to the dealers to detect in the future. But the fact that Toyota has never “seemed” to be bothered about this kinda thing in the past unlike ford, Chevy, GM etc who have actively voided warranty’s due to custom tunes makes me think you’ll be safe for the foreseeable future.
But to answer you question, yes it does void the warranty.

It does not void your warranty to have this tune on your vehicle. What it does do is allow Toyota to deny any claims related to failure caused by the aftermarket parts you have installed. So you install the tune and the motor blows, Toyota cab and will deny the claim if they can tell it was tuned. If your AC stops working and you have a tune, well they are not related so they can to deny any claims. It’s not like once you have the tune that’s it warranty is done so and you can’t ever take it in for service.

Sorry, I figured that was what the OP was talking about. It will void your “power train warranty”. Should have been more specific.

Should also note that you can just as easily put the ECU back to stock before taking it into the dealer, and unlike Ford it doesn’t seem like the Toyota ECU has a flash count, so they (Toyota or dealer) could probably never tell.

Can’t be detected. You can remove it prior to service if you’re worried. Only thing that’ll show up is “miles since DTC reset” which is the same as unplugging your battery.

But the more attention we draw to it, the more Toyota will see. If you think they aren’t watching these forums from time to time, you’re crazy.

I thought I read the ovtune folks have discussed the tune with Toyota engineering.

That doesn’t mean it’s ok with your warranty and that all of Toyota knows about it.

They’ll easily blame a ECU problem or engine failure to the tune if they can prove it’s been tapered with and your warranty is out the window.

I’m very sure they’ll be able to incorporate a “TD1” style code to the ECU if it gets out of hand.

Did not mean to imply that. I was pointing out it appears they’ve had direct comms, not just lurking the forums.

I’m confused about what point you’re trying to make.

Even if the lurk, talk to tuners, it doesn’t make the tune ok.

They won’t detect it now. But it’ll only take a few years of people changing the ECM for them to find a way to flag it.

I get all the risks involved and if you read the disclaimer on the website they break it all down. It's all on you the buyer and it is for off road use blah blah blah... I'm really curious as to how many people have actually had warranty issues with the OV tune (whether or not it was a direct result of the tune or Toyota used that as an excuse to void the warranty).

Yet nobody has reported here that Toyota has denied fixing a warranty issue due to OVTUNE.

I think this was true of every version up until 1.05. I believe the dealer will see 1.05 if they read the ECU after you have flashed it.

Mat said something along those lines, but I'm having trouble finding the exact post.

In theory using the tune could be used as an excuse to void your entire power train warranty were something to go wrong. The likelihood of that is extremely low.

if you're anxious about it spend 5-10 and flash to stock. no problem.

He went back on that and said because of the “uproar” of people panicked about the dealer knowing he didn’t change the ecu id. You can still put a request in for him to do that but mat strongly suggests flashing to stock before you get any major work done at a dealer anyways
