I’ve seen many people recommend a special oil filter tool from Amazon that costs $25-30. Just wondering if Toyota’s oil filter is special or too tight to be removed? These tools cost much less in Harbor Freight.

I'm not sure what the question is here, but I used the one that I linked for the 5k change. I was bored and a TW-hypochondriac. It worked great and there was no mention of problems at the 10k ToyotaCare oil change (I added the 5k oil change in the Service History in the toyota.com owners section).

The first filter removal will be tough because it was horsed on tight with no oil on the gasket. Use a big screw driver pierced through the center and get it off. After that run oil around the gasket and twist them on until it touches the mount. Twist 1/4 to 1/2 turn after that and no more. You'll always be able to get it off with a rag and a little elbow grease from then on. Now if you take it to the dealer or a quickie lube shop they'll put them on too tight but then it's not your problem to get them off. I own a half dozen oil filter removal tools and they either slip or you can't get any leverage. The only filter that makes it easy is a K&N with a built in nut on top. Others should do that unless its a patented thing.

Again, that does not apply to the 3rd Gen.

We'll be very unhappy going 1/2 turn after seated.
