Supposedly "pre-salting" actually reduces the salt needed. I don't know. I definitely remember back when I was a kid in central new york, seems they mostly used sand. Sometimes you needed a 4X4 and/or snow tires to get around, or you stayed the fuck home. Nowadays seems the expectation has shifted, and people don't want to be inconvenienced by having to change their driving habits from the usual lay on the gas/lay on the brake/ride the next car's bumper, regardless of the conditions.

That said I became hip to the Fluid Film thing this year after joining this site. It seems like it's doing the job - the frame looks grimy as hell but the coating hasn't come off. I've taken it through the self-serve car wash and used low pressure - water just beads right off it.

Back in the 50's/60's, in W. Va., they used a cinder/salt mix on the roads.

You are 110% correct about many modern drivers. Provides lots of TV news clips!!

the "brine" solution acts as a barrier for ice/snow. it helps prevent it from "sticking" to the road. kind of like PAM for baking. the plows can move the accumulation easier and need less salt on the roads to melt.

problem is with how cold it's been salt is useless anyway

I think I am a little late, and sorry if someone already said this but: KROWN RUST CONTROL is the way to go. $125ish a year, they undercoated, spray inside the frame, they drill into the body panels in the doors and spray inside there too. That oil gets everywhere, and I know people who are still driving pretty much rust free cars from the 80;s because they used KROWN. It works.

Wish there was a place local to me that would do it. But I'm forced to do it myself at home.

This is where I got my spray gun and wands.

Easier to get the buckets at the local autoparts store. I think the Fleet Pride chain carries the fluid

Fluid film gets my vote easy to put on too, I may not live in a snowy area but I take all the precautions I can when I go to the mountains since there reputation of frames rusting away easily

Eh, I just buy the nozzle off of Amazon and switch it between cans. I had to use about 12 cans for my sisters 2dr yaris, I even went behind the bumpers cuz I notice small amts of rust developing there.

I’ve painted many frames, diffs, bumpers etc with chassis saver and it’s a great product.Only problem is getting it inside a boxed frame.Thats where products like fluid film excel.
