Toyota is behind on the competitive side of things but they make great trucks

I took two first gen Tundra work trucks well past 350K, all the while suffering abuse from help that probably didn't think they were getting paid enough and the trucks were their only outlet. - No major repairs - abysmal maintenance -

My brother took his second gen Tacoma work truck close to 400K. - No major repairs - meticulous maintenance -

My personal record is 400K on a 1990 Ford F-150, 4.9 straight six with the Mazda 5 speed. - 2 clutches - no major repairs - well maintained -
I've had three since, but that was my last reliable Ford. No mas..

I have no reason not to expect good things from this third gen.

2016 bought used a year ago with 19k on it now at 55k. Aggressive PM schedule and rustproofing. I do a lot of hwy kms and expect to reach 300k but like many, boredom usually gets to me and i have to flip into something else.

That's just it. All the other manufacturers keep pumping out new models every 3-4 years. They have all the latest tech, fastest engines and rising MSRPS. But which one has a mid-size truck you know is bullet proof? It doesn't have a 400hp v6 or can analyze what mood you're in, but it sure looks great and after 10 years of ownership will still haul your next mid-life crisis down to the docks.

exactly for what i use the truck for is perfect for me, (hauling the dirt bike) and the occasional my friend needs help moving. ive had 2 sedans before the tacoma and i will never go back to a car ever again for mainly these reasons
    1. i feel much more safer in a tall vehicle
    2. the utility of a truck is great
in the future ill probably move to a full size truck just based on how much more room it is in the cab for my fat ass. And that tundra make a great sound with the V8.

I have the same reasons. Had a few coupes and a sedan before. Much safer in a truck. And I like seeing the traffic ahead of the guy im behind.

The ecoboost was derived from the Mazda L engine and came out in early 2000's with development im sure back to the 90's. Different variants just like our Yota G engines. Major car companies are putting more into tranny/drivetrain now looks like. Turbos are a band aid to govt emissions regulations. They are reliable by todays standards but still a variable. They let privateers do the torture testing and then sent an eco 6 to Le Mans. Truly developing a ground up engine from scratch is not high up on any car makers list. I feel like the regulations will eventually outrun even turbos. I like turbos but am skeptical about long term integrity. Is long term 7-10 years? Prolly be time for serious maint anyway. Just adding the cost of turbo on top of whatever starts to go in that timeframe.

They already have a Lexus 3.5 turbo so if I had to guess, I would say the 3rd Gen platform was never designed to accept one. It would not surprise me to see an optional turbo in the 4th Gen, but you never know.

I like how the turbo was built into the car and not the utility truck.

Underpowered engines in all their vehicles and not keeping up with competitors. Yeah Tacoma looks great, and so does the new Supra, and so does the Yota 86, but all three of them fall on their face when compared to other vehicles in their class. I love my Tacoma and I'll probably buy a 3rd gen when I get a new truck. I'm just saying. We don't have to have some blind love and affection for Toyota when they really aren't innovating their engines.

The only guarantees in life are death and taxes...and genital warts . Take care if it and you can absolutely get that type of milage. The guy with the Gen 2 has over a million .

There's a million mile 2nd gen Tundra out there too. IIRC, and the story is legit, it made it close to 800K before the tranny came out.

Anyone with 300k-400k miles on a 1st Gen and 2nd Gen has done shitloads of maintenance and repairs. Do a search or own one.

Interesting that the 3rd gen "longevity" discussion focuses on the engine and transmission.

In the past, I have had issues with electrical systems, rusting, nickle and dime general issues happening one after another...(not Toyota).

There are many other reasons that a vehicle might have past its prime and need to go bye bye, not just engine and transmission issues.

My last truck had a strong V6 and 5 speed on the original clutch at 19 years and 200k miles. But it was otherwise ready for the junk yard, imo.

I'm FAR more concerned with electronic / electrical issues manifesting themselves within my third gen, than I am the 'powertrain'.
