For the first time ever, my 2016 SR5 Tacoma had the rear drum brakes freeze up on me.

It was 17 degrees outside and I was able to break it free with a little extra throttle, but it was a littler unnerving.

Anyway, I remember reading about it from a few guys a long time ago and thought it was strange and would never happen to me, but it did!

    Keep on truckin. :mudding:

when you say "freeze", I assume you literally mean frozen due to cold weather. and not simply "not moving".

Still haven't experienced this. Has been below 0 many times and not seen it. I am thinking there is a specific set of circumstances or reasons that must cause this.

Same here in never having the issue either. We just had 2 inches of rain and then it changed over to snow and the temperature plummeted to below zero, truck was encased in ice but the handbrake did not hang up at all.

Did you go through water or car wash before letting it sit over night? Water in the rear hubs can “freeze” them even in 70F degree weather.

Yessir, I believe its due to moisture getting into the drum. Once it thawed out I was fine.

I always park with the hand brake on. When I released it to reverse, the drums were still closed on the wheels.

No car wash, but we've been having constant melt/freeze cycles here in Missouri lately.

DH, I always heard that during the winter months one shouldn't use the E-brake to avoid the experience that you had. Glad it wasn't anything more serious.

Anybody here use a chock block when it gets cold in lieu of using the parking brake?
