Let me preface this by saying that I am by no means a "Car Audio" guy. But do the sound systems in our trucks just suck? Or mine in particular? The non-JBL/eNTUNE whatever the hell? I know it's just the basic radio, but why is it sooo bad? I pretty much hate dealing with all vehicle electronics in general, so I really don't have any intention of diving into the wormhole of upgrading. It's just the only thing that's bumming me out about my truck so far... Could something as simple as new plug n' play speakers improve the experience?

I’m not car audio expert either but with my 2nd gen I switched the head unit out and it was a huge upgrade. I did have a regular cab so maybe it’s not the same thing but it might be a good start.

Sweet! Once you get all set up, let us know! There are a few of us in here who shoot bows. We could all get together and sling some arrows one day.

Yeh, what @113tac said. New head unit will be a better initial upgrade than speakers because the aftermarket head unit has a better built in amp than the stock unit. If you put in new speakers with no extra power to them, it won't be as noticeable of a difference. Switching the head unit in my truck made a big difference.

Thanks guys. That make's sense that the power comes from the Amp built into the head unit. I wasn't thinking about that. Cuz yeah, it's mostly just weak as water. Sound quality seems decent, just doesn't have any uumph. I'm not a "loud music" kind of guy. I don't care about the car next to me knowing what I'm listening to. I just don't want to have to turn it up to MAX going down the interstate with the window cracked.
On a side note, wonder how long before I'm ripping the interior out and sound deadening.... Road noise seems more than what I like...

I used to work there and will return when my shoulder recovers. I honestly don’t believe you’ll find a more knowledgeable person than Farron and his customer service is fantastic. Go with an open mind and willing to listen. Tell him you spoke with Chris Carter

I have been pondering the sound deadening route for a while now, just too lazy to actually go through with it. As far as the radio goes, I didn't really have any major issues with my 2014 or even my 2016 (both non-JBL). I am like you though and not really a "sound" guy. The only thing that bothered me was that both of those trucks had the door speakers replaced because they would rattle; I promise it wasn't from me because I don't listen to my music loud or even listen to much music with heavy bass. In my 2017, I have JBL and I do notice an improvement in the sound quality (and no speaker rattle to date...knock on wood).

All that being said, I would go aftermarket if it really bothers you. I remember researching a company that makes a direct-fit upgrade for 2nd Gens, but I can't recall who that was off the top of my head. I will search my watched threads to see if it is still in there...

They are known to suck royally even the JBL systems are pretty bad IMO. There are some cool aftermarket direct fit options out there. Like has been mentioned before upgrading the headunit is a big upgrade but the stock speakers are pretty weak and lack any depth as far as sound goes.

Mine seems pretty decent in mine. I have the right below Nav one.

I put Kicker speakers in mine after blowing one of the old ones, makes a decent bit of difference.

If you are quite a distance away give him a call first to make sure he will be there. The other guys are fine as well I trained the younger one some. Farron is top notch though

@BTHawk yeah I'm not a guy that needs to put a "system" in whatever I'm driving, I want tools behind my back seats, not big boxes for wooftweetsubs or whatever. I just find myself on the volume knob somewhere between like 48-52ish? 60 is MAX. Seems like I shouldn't have to have it up that loud. Granted I am pretty deaf, due to lots of contributing factors.

@ovrlndkull I'll probably replace everything at some point, there's so much more that I want to do first though...

@R490 Yeah I think mine is the right before NAV one. I mean it's a nice touchscreen unit, and I like a lot of the features. Just have to turn it up to 11, if you know what I'm sayin'.

I have a pelfreybilt battery cage for second gens, so you can fit a group 31 in stock location. Selling it for $80 if anyone wants it. Stainless steel so it won’t rust.
