I'm looking to swap out the wheels on my 2017 Tacoma Off-Road, and I've been running into a lot of mixed information about the setup I want to run. The truck is on stock suspension currently and I am wanting to swap wheels but keep my current tire size (265/70/17). The wheels I am looking at getting are 17x9 with -12 offset (4.53 backspacing). My issue is I've saw multiple people say they are running this setup with no issues, and multiple say there is slight rubbing. I would like to not have any rubbing and not do any trimming to the truck at all. If there is a chance of them rubbing, are the Bilstein 5100's enough to raise it in the front to give me the clearance I need? I'm sure this is talked about on another thread somewhere but I've been unable to find anything conclusive.

You'll probably have to remove your front mudflaps and maybe do a tiny bit of trimming inside the wheelwell depending on how much lift you have with the 5100s

Other than that should work fine

That's the thing, if it comes down to having to do any trimming, I'll just keep the wheels that are on it now. I just want to have more offset wheels for a slightly aggressive stance, but want to stay away from a straight up lift, and any rubbing

The trimming would probably be less than an inch if any like I had to do when I was on stock suspension to get rid of a tiny bit of rub, (different years I know, I think you may have more room to work with) my wheels have a -12mm offset as well.

A level from 5100 would be enough clearance but you'd probably still have to remove the from mudflaps which is no big deal

Alright, thanks for the input. I’m hoping someone else on here with a 3rd gen has tried this setup and can let me know how it worked for them

The -12mm offset on a 9-inch wide wheel is aggressive, even with 265/70R-17's, and may rub. A 17x8.5 0 offset wheel would be a better fit and shouldn't require any trimming with your current tire size.

Thanks for the reply, but I am really stuck on the 17x9 -12 offset

I have also seen several people adding a leaf in the rear or putting block, but I’d like to stay away from that as well. Would the 5100’s themselves be enough for me to get the clearance I need on the front end?

May I ask what is it that you're stuck on with the 9 with the -12mm offset?

Typically speaking, you want to keep your wheels and tires in the deepest part of your fenders. Think of your fenders as bowl-shaped, if you go with a wide wheel with low offset the assembly will be pushed out and centered in a shallower location of your fender which can create tire rub, even with a leveling kit. Keeping them tucked with a narrower/higher offset wheel will center them in a deeper part of your fenders.

I really just want to stick my wheels/tires out a hair to get a little bit of stance on my truck and I figured a -12 offset would be able to do that pretty well

You're right, wider and lower offset wheels will stick out more when compared to narrower, higher offset wheels.

The fitment you proposed is definitely doable but just be prepared that modifications around the cab mount may be needed. Unfortunately not all vehicles sit the same from factory and tires are like shoes, some run larger while others run smaller, even in the same size. If you can, I would try test fitting a single wheel to see if it's going to work for you. If it rubs slightly, you may be able to simply adjust the caster (positive) to eliminate the rubbing.

    For reference, a 17x9 ET-12 will only sit ~1-inch further out when compared to a 17x8.5 ET0

Would I be able to get by with a +1 offset on a 17x9?

The 0 offset will tuck the assembly in about 1/2-inch more over the ET-12 and with factory tires that may work. It'll be tight though.

Unfortunately, there are too many variables when pushing maximum fitment to know for sure.

What about a 17x8.5 with +14 offset? Would that stick the tires/wheels out any further than factory and would they cause any rubbing?

Going with a 17x8.5 +14 will push the front lip of the wheel outward 29mm (just over 1 inch) further than your stock wheels. This should fit fine.

If you don’t mind me bothering you again, what would be the difference in measurements in a 17x9 with +1 and a 17x8.5 with +14? How much differently would they sit according to my fender?I’m looking at just doing wheels right now and then moving up to possibly a mud terrain tire so I don’t want to push my maximum fitment so I’ll have room for tires with some more tread later on

No problem at all. If you are wanting a comparison to how they sit in relation to the stock 17x7.5 +30 here is the difference:

One last thing, would you mind using those same diagrams as you used above except use a 16x7 with +25 offset as the old wheel? From what I’ve found the trd off road wheels that are on my truck are the first dimension I just stated.

My truck currently has a set of 17” KMC XD series wheels but I am not sure if the offset so that’s why I’m asking about stock wheels, I’d like to know how much further out they will stick than stock
