A hard start once in a blue moon isn't indicative of a damn thing, hot or cold.

I think that the push start may have a slight delay compared to the key starts that most of us are probably used to. I've had a couple instances where I've pushed the button and it's started to turn over and I shift into reverse before it catches. Engine won't start until I shift back into park and try again (and the check engine light/other indications show up). I don't consider it a problem but it just reacts a bit slower than previous vehicles.

Inferring from the description of snow my initial theory would be that a cold battery may be the problem, but not something to worry about too much.

Ther first start may have consumed what little power the battery had......had you run it longer the alternator would have charged the battery and the battery would have come up to temperature and thus worked within its optimal range.

In your case a cold battery may point to the issue you had, and the difference between the two cranks may have been minute and impractical to measure. Just a theory.

How long were you cranking during the no starts?

I had something similar happen to me once and once only so far.

My truck was cold, parked it the night before in the driveway. Next morning got in an tried to start it, it cranked for what seemed like a set amount of time with the push button and then would stop cranking and displayed the battery error. Tried it again twice, same exact thing. On the last try I tapped the gas pedal just a bit and it started up. No problem since.

It was maybe 20 degrees outside, so it wasn't that cold.

What got me was that it happened to be the same time that one of my recently installed XD HID lights failed to illuminate. But the thing was cranking fine, so it had to be just a fluke with gas getting through. Ended up later on tracing the HID issue to the relay being faulty. I believe in coincidences but think true coincidences are rare, I guess this was a real one.

Anyways, I agree that if it happens again, it's a problem. One time, I would not be concerned.

Thanks for the input. Hasnt happened today so it may be a one time issue. Just odd that it ran two 15 min periods earlier that day with no issues then have the front end up and no start after running for 2 mins

Sorry i was holding the button for about 5 seconds. (Was saying in my head the second not start one Mississippi) the third time which actually started it took about 3 seconds.

Gotcha. Yea, I wouldn’t worry much unless it does it again soon.

Something similar has happened to me...

A couple months ago I had just left my house (cold engine) and realized I forgot to grab something, so I started backing up to the driveway and stalled out (MT reverse problems), tried to restart and engine just cranked, tried this a couple of times and the engine would just crank. Finally, on the 3rd or 4th try, it started back up.

I thought it might be that the battery was going bad, so I let it sit overnight and tested the voltage in the morning, it was a little low, but nothing extreme, but I decided to get a new one from Costco anyways.

Truck has run fine until this morning, was backing out of the garage (cold engine) and thought I had put it in neutral while I was waiting for the garage to close and stalled out (as I was still in reverse). Tried to turn the truck back on and it would just crank; also got a low oil warning on the dash (driveway is not angled at all)... Anyways, tried to start again and it just cranked for awhile and then it sputtered to life and continued sputtering for a couple seconds afterward (think, rough idle). The low oil warning did not reappear and I was able to drive off just fine.

There is something odd about shutting down/stalling a cold engine and it not being able to restart right away, but I’m not too sure what the connection is... it doesn’t seem like this should be normal operation, but I have a feeling, with these trucks, it is.

    Prove me wrong.

Lol, are you serious? It’s so much easier for an engine to start warm/hot vs cold. In fact, the first thing I do when I go to buy a used car/truck/motorcycle is see if the motor is warm. If it’s warm, I tell the guy I’ll be back in an hour so I can see how it starts when it’s cold.

If I stall my 17 MT while cold it won't restart for 45-60 seconds, although it feels like forever. This has happened a few times backing out of the driveway when it's really snowy/icy. Sometimes it stores a code for the failed start, other times it doesn't. I'd love to know what's going on.

I have stalled my 18 MT a few times in different situations but it always starts back up easily. Not quite like before a stall but it’s never seemed like something to be concerned about

Wow, I’d get it checked . Absolutely no reason for a no start hot or cold . If the engine is stalled out after being lugged that’s one thing . Shutting it down and then a failure to restart plus a check engine light . That says bring it to the dealer .
After a stall out , the cylinders still have unburnt gasoline it them causing an overly rich condition . It’s called stoichiometric ratio. Overly rich (too much fuel) or lean ( not enough fuel ) will cause a no start. Typically the fuel after a stall evaporates then the vehicle will start .

I left the truck with them when I got the first free oil change. As per the usual dealer routine, the couldn't replicate.

I need to try and replicate the problem while the OBDlink is hooked up and logging data...Regarding stoich, this was soon enough after starting the truck it was still running cold start enrichment.
