Excited to install all this in the taco tomorrow! Got the custom 10" subwoofer box from Taco Tunes. Anyone else done any sound upgrades in their 3rd gen?

If you don't mind me asking... about how much did your system cost? I'm guessing you bought all the components individually vs dropping for a full kit.

Dude it was not too bad. The jbl 6x9's for the front doors were 70. The jbl 6x1/2's for rear door were 50. Kicker 10" sub was 140. The taco tunes 10" box was 120 i think. Alpine amp to power the sub was 120. Then i did the alpine bass knob to control bass volume which was 30.. with wiring kit's and everything else i spent like 575 total. Also add like another 250 or so if you have to hire someone to install. Luckily, my brother does a lot of car audio.

Cool thanks for the info! Did you go through Crutchfield or a similar retailer or just a local audio store? I've been wanting to upgrade the sound system now that I bought my truck off the lease but I couldn't swallow spending 1K plus.

I bought everything on Amazon. Except the sub box, which i bought from the taco tunes website. For the price, this system is going to seriously rock. Much better than the option they give you at the dealership. The 6x9's came last week before everything else. I was antsy, so i installed just the front door speakers. And these speakers are SO good. Just putting those two in drastically improved the sound. They put out pretty decent bass and very good highs. My last setup i had, i used an 8" alpine compact powered sub. Which was like 350, those jbl 6x9's put out comparable bass to that compact sub. And the highs are spectacular. Highly recommend these speakers. Can't wait to get everything installed.

I was thinking this JL Audio 8" sub was the only thing i needed. I think, I'll add on a pair of 6x9's now!

That's a pretty good sub setup. My buddy has that in his car. Will the dimensions of that fit behind the back seats? Or were you planning on placing somewhere else?

Let me know how the 6 1/2 fit in the back door. They are not supposed to according to Crutchfield and Sonixelectronics. I did the same 6x9 in the doors and a 3 1/2 in the dash fronts (must wear the cone of shame since I have not posted pics of the install yet. it is not a straight drop in but an amazing difference in sound).

i forget which review i read, someone with a taco posted a pick with this setup on the passenger side space behind the seat. I think, I'll start with this, then if i need more definition with the high's/mids I'll add the 6x9's thanks for the idea!

If you check out *********.com, they have sub boxes that are specifically designed to fit behind 3rd gen seats and they are like 120$. They have boxes for 10" and 12" subs. Depending on the RMS of sub you choose, you should be able to get away with spending 120-150$ on an amp to power it. That leaves you with 200$ to pick a subwoofer. And you can get a super bad ass sub for 200$. But that's basing it off your price point of 470$ for the JL setup. IMO they way overcharge for the compact powered setups. Alpine, Kicker and Kenwood all over charge for those compact powered units. They are convenient, but not best bang for your buck. Your getting 250 watts RMS on that JL setup. For the same price, if you pick the sub box, sub and amp separately. You could easily get a setup pushing 500 watts RMS for the same price as the JL unit which is half that.

Well im hoping the 6x1/2 fit. I was on crutch field as well and they said there were no tweeters that were a fitment to my taco. So I skipped out on those. Which tweeters did you go with?
You put those same JBL's in your front doors?!

Yea I did the tweeters first and I definitely noticed a difference just swapping those out.

Any upgrade over the stock is going to be awesome.. wait until you see how shitty the stock speakers are haha.

Everything was super simple too.. it was my first time doing any type of speakers/trim removal so I watched that video in that thread a ton of times lol.

yep GX963. Got them with the Toyota adapter plate and wiring connector from Crutchfield. Will have to lookup what tweeters I put in.

Yes, and I'm still having a blast every time I turn it on.

They are great speakers! I have always stuck by Alpine type S door speakers. Decided to switch it up and the gx963's are way better than i expected they would be.

    Infinity reference 0.75 tweeters
    Infinity reference 9622ix 6x9 speakers
Reference Series REF-6522IX 6-1/2" speakers (note IX supposedly does not fit tacoma)

No sub or future plans, can't spare the interior space for now.

    Future wish list:
Amplifier: Alpine ktp455U - Tiny behind OEM HU
As off yet, I can't find the justification as the Infinity speaker set up is very efficient (loud) with plenty of clear bass, great treble and highs. But I may do it just for principle? Huh
