Water leaking through speaker grill?

I have watched a lot of videos about taking off the door panel and it does look easy. I ordered the trim removal tool from Amazon. I plan to take off the door on Sunday morning as it will be warmest on Sunday. Anything to watch out for when removing the panel? The only thing that looks a bit tricky is removing the green and white wires where the door handle/lock are.

What additional tools will I need to remove the speaker from the mount so I can look behind there?

I plan to take a lot of pictures and post them up here - what should I be looking for exactly?

A screw driver or a set of sockets to remove the speaker is all you need

Thanks, i watched all the videos. The only thing that looks tricky is removing the green and white wires behind the door. Anything to be careful about when removing them?

 

Is not hard at all, but if you don't want to pull the green & white wires you can also remove the handle with the wires attached. The door handle just clips from top and bottom of it.

 

The taco tunes video mentioned something about being careful with those green and white wires or you might snap them. What exactly do i need to watch out for?

 

There is a better video to watch. It is about installing the OEM sound system. There is nothing special about those wires, just remember how you take them out. If you have problems putting them back, you can always look at the other door.

 

They are not wires they are cables, i'm guessing the video you watched recommended making sure they are "snapped" back in place. Door panel removal on these trucks is extremely simple, maybe a 2 on a 1 - 10 difficulty scale.

 

Start taking off the panel from the bottom. If you don't unhook the cables it would be great. It's a little tricky getting them to stay in place during re-install. That was the only thing I had problems with. Take lots of reference pictures.

 

Did they cut into or partially remove the plastic seal behind the door panel?

Getting the door off was a piece of cake. I don't know why I didn't do it myself to start with. Lots of pics below.

My observations. It is not raining today, so this is residual water from the last rain:

The water shield looks intact and fine. Didn't see any rips anywhere.
I only saw water in two places. One was at the bottom of the water shield, where I am pointing my finger. I don't see how this could get all the way to the speaker grill holes to leak through, so I don't think this is it.

I also saw water on the bottom of the speaker, and when I took off the speaker and flipped it over, there was water at the bottom of the mounting bracket. Seems like maybe water is getting in from behind the speaker, and getting between the mounting bracket and speaker, then leaking out the holes.

Also it looks like she installed the speaker upside down inside the mounting bracket- does that matter for anything?

Next time it rains, I will again take the panel off and inspect again.

 

Id run a hose over the door with it shut and the panel off and see if I see anything.

OK thanks all I will take another look.

While I am back there I will change the wiring harness as the sound has been crackling. I have a cable with a white and black wire - do I just pull these two wires out from the speaker, and plug the new cable in its place? Is there anything special about disconnecting/reconnecting the cable? And then, do I follow the cable up to where it connects to the door and plug it in? Never changed a harness before. Thanks.

Not me but search threads in audio/video, I saw someone did a while ago

 

So, how to I change the harness? Do the white and black plugs just pull out of the speaker? Anything special to watch out for?

 

Just unplugs, from the look of it this is nothing

 

Do you think this would do the job for sealant?

I think the problem I am having is related to the drip guard on the factory speaker bracket. Here is a pic of the factory speaker. You can see the bracket has a water shield along the top half of it, so when water gets into the door panel, it hits the drip guard on the bracket and drips off the side.



My aftermarket speaker brackets do not have this drip guard. I think the water is hitting the speaker, dripping around it to the bottom, and then pushing its way through the door panel speaker grill. This is also why the aftermarket speakers sound like crap when it is cold, because all the water on the speaker turns to ice.

Are there any speaker brackets that have this drip shield on it that I could use with my aftermarket speakers? What about a speaker baffle like:

That’s still a very abnormal amount of water getting in. Looks as if some water is coming in from above the speaker. I’m still very suspicious of your window seals. I would leave the panel off the door shut it and start drenching it with a hose. See if you can tell where the water is making entry. Also if it’s getting in around the speaker I think most would remain around there. Water takes the least resistant path. One of your pics showed the entire door bottom with water dripping off it. Maybe it’s because the door was shut. Looks like it was coming from behind the entire panel. Either was it was a lot of water there shouldn’t of been that much making its way behind the seals
