Is this sound the "taco tick" everyone is referring to?

The 2016 I had for a day sounded the same. I was able to return the truck as I bought it at CARMAX which has a 5 day return policy. The noise was real prominent at idle. When I brought the truck home I had it idling in the drive. The longer the idle the louder the ticking/knocking became. At first I pulled the dip stick thinking the idiots forgot to add the oil. It had oil. I shut the engine down and re checked the oil after a few minutes. It had plenty of oil. The next day I drove it to work. It wasn't until I got back from lunch as I approached the truck did I notice the hail damage on the roof. Not just a little, a lot! Like who looks on the roof right? There was no other damage to the truck except the roof. I suspect since it had a sunroof the headliner and sunroof were not pulled. As the dents would not be noticeable on the roof. I drove it right over to CARMAX and got my money back. They weren't happy with me. They asked if it had any other issues, that's when I had them start it up and let it idle and then the ticking/knocking became prominent. CARMAX is notorious for hiring brain dead mechanics, but he said it sounds like the valves were slapping. When you return a vehicle to CARMAX you are flagged for 30 days from buying unless paying cash or bringing your own financing.

I now have a 2017 brand new Tacoma. After talking to several owners this is normal. I'm not convinced it is normal and it's more or less sloppy engineering. For what I bought the truck for it will work for now. It does have other nuisance issues.

There is literally nothing wrong with the engine making this sound. Are you going going to complain that a newer Diesel engine is broken because it doesn't make the valve clatter noise of older Diesels?

Mine is drivers side... gets louder than this at times and Always is there in idle or neutral, ‘knocking/ticking’ started after a few minutes of starting the car...

Sounds like low oil, valves tapping. I noticed it on mine the other day at idle. The taps raise with rpm also. My first di engine so, who knows.

    3rd gen owners,
I'll try to make this short. Took delivery of my new Sport on March 2017. Have reported this noise since 700 miles on the clock to two different dealers. Regional service rep for new England has met with me 3 times for this, once on the phone. Toyota corp has 4 separate trouble reports registered for my truck strictly for this engine noise.
Sorry but the truck engine is designed that way. Noise #1. Injectors cleaning. Noise #2 , high pressure fuel pump ( this is the one that has the loudest noise most of us are hearing). There's a 3rd but the source escapes me at this writing.
Have met with three other owners, all have same noise. Dealers compared my truck to new, on the lot 17s and 18s in my presence. All do the same thing to varying degrees but all do it.
Yes, it's very sad that Toyota would knowingly produce an engine that displays this sort of design flaw noise but there it is my friends. It's normal. Damn.

The sound does not sound normal to me

I can hear the normal Injector cleaning cycle (tick) and the normal valve train sound, I don't hear the dreaded HPFP chirping sound, but a deep clanking sound indicative of something else, uncharacteristic to this engine.

I would advice a dealer visit, maybe a different dealer or two and get the concern documented for future reference and hope for the best outcome.

    Good luck
    Cheers!

Agreed. The clanking is not normal. Had my chirping HPFP replaced about a year ago with a new HPFP that had a manufacturer change. 15,000 miles on it no more chirp on mine. However I do hear the HPFP in the video clicking (normal).

Sounds like the fuel pump and is working as designed.

Ill say it again, all this over-engineering for an engine that I'm getting 15 mpg on seems...interesting to say the least. If they never did Otto/Atkinson and all the other...interesting...mods, what would I get instead of 15 mpg, 14.9 lol?

I still love the truck, it just boggles my mind.

"ok guys, we are going to engineer the engine and transmission with X, Y and Z!"
    "What improvement will we get?"
    "Less than 1 mpg!"

its a mini van engine. All I need to know to be honest. Oldest vehicles I see on the roads are mini vans. Most of the time they say
    "Rodriguez painting and tile".

The question I have to the OP is:
Was this same sound present when the vehicle was new??

Keep using that 0W-20 POS oil.
Went to 5W-30 and is a lot quieter.
If anybody in Phoenix/East Valley we can meet and prove it.

I was wondering if a thicker oil or additive would calm the valve train noise a bit!

Mine has had a quiet tick at idle since new, but that's all DI engines... Mine does not make the slapping/tapping noise in your recording. Sounds like a lubrication issue somewhere internal.

Mine clicks but doesn't seem as loud and chattery (is that a word) as in the video. I think maybe the recording amplifies it. Anyway, they say it's normal and at least you know it's running. my wife's Avalon is so quite, I've tried to start it a few times while it was running and once I got out and left it running for a couple of hours because I couldn't hear it.

The recording definitely does amplify the sound. I believe I already mentioned on here that the "tick" that I recorded is the high pressure fuel pump that rides the cam. It's noisy but it sounds exactly the same at 70k miles as it did new, so I don't think there's anything to worry about.
