Might have been most anything .

Oil or grease cooking out of the housing

kinking the gun enough to slowdown the wire

Electrical demand from other loads dropping input voltage

    some that come to mind

Gotcha. I’m gonna do this weld in skid but have been up in the air about pulling the third or not. My fluid is pretty fresh so I will probably just drain, pull the third, then put the same fluid back in there when I’m done.

anyone wanna help me out with a rebate?

I only need a little info from someone in welding school or had only been out less than a year to qualify for a rebate.

I don't think you should pull the 3rd and drain fluid to weld. I think the fluid keeps the inside of the diff carrier cool and won't burn or catch on fire. Just replace the fluid after you weld.

This is what I debate in my mind. I'm about to truss and armor one and I keep going back and forth.

I'm not sure about welding a truss that sits on top of the axle. I felt comfortable welding that little diff guard because it sits low on the axle where the fluid is.

Yeah. I'm probably to pull both axles from the truck that way I can have them in more comfortable welding positions.

I'm the same way and see it both ways. I feel like pulling the 3rd is a good way to play it safe but you raise a good point about the residual gear oil potentially catching fire. Though after a quick searching on ih8mud it looks like it'll just smoke but not actually catch. I would just hate to cause an expensive repair if I manage to fuck up my gears somehow with too much heat.

Up to you, but no way in hell was I going to pull my third just for that. Lol

Yup, if I remotely thought that the third could be damaged by this, I would have welded this while I had the third out last week.
But, if it worries you, I would do it the way that will give you piece of mind. ;)

This is one of those things !!

When your welding on your equipment one does what you think is best.

When I get paid to weld every safety precaution is followed because if something gets damaged I am buying a new one .

So every job is bid that way

Just a follow up on the benchmark abrasives flap discs.

So far they've been hanging in pretty good, mainly been using them for deburring cut offs from my abrasive chop saw. Still on my first 40 grit wheel have about a months worth use on it welding 2-3 times a week.
