Real talk guys, can we start a petition to get Elon to either grow or shave, his stubble is constantly kept in the gross in between state. He got enough money to fix his hair but for some reason the high school sophomore beard is still around

yeah those wide open aperture fixed lenses are super sharp...when they catch focus that is lol. The depth of field is so shallow that it's easy to focus on the wrong part of something and have whatever it is you wanted to be sharp, fall out of focus.

Canon sells an 85mm f/1.2 lens....that thing has SUPER shallow depth of field, but it's like $1500

I have always had issues getting focus lock on what I want with my 50mm but it is a damn clear lens when it plays along

Yeah that isn't a prime lens and likely won't have the same intense DOF of the 50mm lenses we're talking about

yeah they can be tricky, have to play with the spot focus adjustments on the camera to help the lens focus on exactly what you want, otherwise it's kind of a crap shoot. Using the old school ones with only manual focus is fun lol

what's the aperture range? That's usually the standard that determines the quality of a lens aside from the glass that's used (also how expensive it is). "Average" lenses have a minimum aperture of f/5.6...good for landscape and stuff where you want the whole picture in focus, but not so ideal if you want to separate something from the background by throwing the background out of focus. For those kinds of photos you want a lens that's capable of f/2.8 or higher...like the fixed 50mm or 85mm's that can go up to f/1.8 or f/1.4

usually the aperture is referred to the 'speed' of a lens when talking about it's range of depth of field...a f/2.8 or higher lens is considered a fast lens and those get pricey. f/5.6 and smaller are usually less expensive

It could be sharp like this...

    [IMG]IMG_3438 by Zane, on Flickr

Or with the same settings and focus point slightly fuzzed...

    [IMG]IMG_3439 by Zane, on Flickr

But oh man the surrealness of the color rendering and field of view...

this is a photo I pulled off of Google but it's using the 85mm f/1.2 lens with the aperture set to f/1.2....crazy shallow depth of field.

    4926698468_bba37859b2_b.jpg

If this were done with an f/5.6 lens for example, the foreground and background wouldn't be nearly as blurry.

yeah those lenses are usually less expensive, but that doesn't at all mean you can't take cool photos with them. Just a little more restricted in capabilities is all. But that's why people usually collect a bunch of lenses over time, because there isn't a single lens out there that can do it all.
