Oil catch can but why?

Thanks for this! I've ordered 10 of them. I've been using the same o-ring for the last two years without any issues but last oil change i noticed the o-ring was getting thinner and you have saved my life!

I run one on my 914-6 Porsche engine, but I don't see the need on a modern 2019 automotive engine.

 

You'd be surprised. Especially with modern engines going with DI systems, a catch can would help keep the valves a little cleaner.

 

As you have a 914-6, I have to officially hate you.

Get the oil filter for Prius and put it in the can. Stops the catched oil from sloshing around.

 

I use one too, it's a very inexpensive mod and it gives me piece of mind. In the cold weather in CT the liquid in the can looks like coffee.

 

I don't see where any of these million mile vehicles needed the can. But if it will give me an extra 10mpg or 100 HP I'll be installing one.

I understand having a catch-can on a Direct injected turbo engine, or direct injection NA engine.

But why put a catch on Toyota's and Ford's Dual injected engines?


However, I do remember seeing a thread here where a guy started parting out a totaled tacoma with sub-25K miles.

He showed us some pictures of the engine parts. I was shocked to see how much oil and gunk was caked-up inside the intake headers.

 

My wifes mini-cooper was direct injected and turbo charged. It was either sell the car or get the valve train blasted with walnut shells or some other cleaning method. We decided to just sell it.

I believe an oil catch-can would have prevented this issue.

I doubt a can would have prevented carbon buildup on the mini-cooper. The buildup occurs because the fuel is applied directly into the combustion chamber, as opposed to running down the intake manifold and valve, thereby cleansing it because fuel is also a solvent of sort.

Fortunately for us, TOYOTA has not ignored the issue or cheapened out, but gave us regular injection AKA cleaning cycle to keep that from happening.

But If you believe the can will help the mini-cooper, you could have just bought or buy one and installed the can. Sometimes there's no substitute to trial & error. Some of the best discoveries have been made in that matter.

Love them street legal go-carts. My poor '71 914/4 has been on blocks, literally concrete blocks for the last 20years+...sad. The hell hole killed off the old girl.

DO you NEED the oil catch can, probably not.
If you don't do your own maintenance...move along.

I will add my experience.
After 10 months (I average about 5k miles per year on this V6 T4R 1GR-FE).
Bottom of a pint Gordons, where is that oil going? Into your intake to be burned and spit out into your kidos lungs? None the less it is added to the environment.

Oil in to your intake will do this.
Intake at about 70k miles.
Spark plugs after 30k.

Most can just go back to jiffy lube and don't worry about it.../sarcasm.

 

can we got some links to some good catch cans?

 

I want to smash the guy's teeth in on the internet that made this whole catch can phenomenon an actual thing. Now everyone thinks it actually does things... which may on a drag car but we're far from that.
